That is called Shill Bidding and it is a federal crime. I ran into it once, on ebay and had a talk with an ebay manager about it. They did nothing for me though. He said they don't contact the buyer on updates on it. And since I never got any refund for the over pricing, I guess they didn't have enough evidence to prove that. I still got it at a good price, so I kept it.
