There's a similar coin on ebay, 1973 50c. I don't know if it's a clip or PMD, so I make no other comment except that the seller's ID is a bit of a worry.

I'd say the original coin and the one in the ebay auction Nancy linked to are probably real clips but you'd need to see them in hand. 50c clips don't show some of the diagnostics that other coins do because of their shape and method of manufacture.

The only two real giveaways are:

1. Fishtailing of letters near the clipped area

2. The transition of the raised rim to the clipped area won't be perfectly sharp. You should see a gentle slope on the raised area down towards the missing part of the coin. A damaged coin will just be "cut off". This can be difficult to detect on worn coins unfortunately.

I'll try to take some pictures illustrating these two diagnostics and post them up later.

Below you can see a real 50c clip. Diagnostics to look out for are shown by A, B, and C.

A. The metal in the second I has flow outwards toward the missing part of the coin. This is shown by the "ramp" at the bottom of that I which isn't present on the first I
B. The raised rim curves ever so slightly outwards right near the missing area of the coin. Again, this is because the metal in this area tends to flow outwards when it is struck.
C. The height of the raised rim (the dimension into and out of the plane of the image) is fairly constant apart from the rim immediately near the clipped region. In this area the height diminishes very gently towards the missing region of the coin.

markn the engineer seems to have appeared in the last posts. The main reason 50c clips are more difficult to determine as real is that they don't show the Blakesley effect as the planchets are not pre-rimmed before striking. So if you can't see any definate fishtailing it's often a bit of a guess.
