CDcoinman, in general you are correct with Canada post not insuring coins....valued above $ 500. $ 500 is good for Canada and US. NOT anywhere else. WHY, because the RCM some years back needed to insure all their small shipments of rip-off coins. the 500$ max value still stand as far a I know.

Coins are Not insurable in Canada at all or any monetary instrument for that matter. Money packet is long gone as a shipping option. The RCM self insures as any coin dealer or certification company does. OT we will all be slabbed one day !

I'm pretty sure that you can insure coins/bullion/precious metals/jewellery for up to $600 when shipping with Canadapost. I recall the CP clerk looking it up in the BIG book one time for me.

When I send stuff with Canada Post, I write on the form "die-stamped metal discs"... It is truthful (somewhat) and I never had issues with insurance claims for lost or stolen items.

When you collect ancients as I do, you no wanna put 'em in slabs. I have just a few top condition coins that are in screw capsules, but they are modern coins only.

If you want to sell a coin through ebay or an auction, if it is slabbed you largely avoid buyer fears of counterfeits or damage that is not obvious. Getting a top grade coin slabbed into the highest tier has a huge impact on value. It would be very tough to get the price of a slabbed MS65+ coin for a coin that is not slabbed. If you plan on leaving coins to someone who is not sophisticated, you lower the risk that they will sell them at a poor price. The newest slabs store coins that prevent adverse toning on copper.

I understand all that, and thank you for your great input on this. When you slab a coin, your paying a small fee to greatly inhance the value, and security of that coin. Security and confidence, that the value will go up, and not down!

All of my 7070 collection is slabbed; ANACS, NGC & PCGS. I like the look and I can pass them around to others who appreciate the beauty, for those who have slippery fingers and for those who like to on them, they are protected. Also for insurance purposes they are serial numbered. To each their own though.

NONE of my ancients are in slabs. I simply do not need to keep them that way.
I have kept all of the sales information for all of the more valuable ancients that I do have. That way, a provenance can be established, in which confidence can be placed, IF they have come from a highly reputable auction house or dealer.
Therefore, I have no need for Third Party Grading.
When you collect ancients as I do, you no wanna put 'em in slabs.

After weighing in the facts from both sides,I have to agree with sel691, I`m afraid I`m siding with no slabs,or third party grading. (for now,anyway}
