I don't know how many have seen more than one counterfeit '55 DDO, but the fakes are very deceptive. Most often they are struck counterfeits, and in this condition I think the only thing to look for are a few diagnostics. As to how it got into circulation, someone may have realized it was a fake and spent it. Then again, let's see what the slabbers say.

Sorry, I haven't sent the coin out yet. I've never submitted a coin to be slabbed before and I'm not sure who is the best one of the three to go with. Any suggestions?

ANACS, the least expensive.

mountainman2 ..PCGS is the most expensive but will also bring the most as far as resale price. Personally, I would send it to Chuck at coppercoins to get it authenticated first...the cost would be minimal, then on to PCGS if it is real.

Yup, what Maineman said. You could also try to get a little bit better pictures and post them here or send to Chuck as well. It may save you some time and money in shipping if he can tell authenticity from pics.

Thank you. I think that I will try to send it to Chuck first. He sounds like a knowledgeable person on error coins. It was already adding up to over $60 to submit it to ANACS and that wasn't even including the delivery costs. I appreciate all the helpful advice. Good forum here. MM2

How are the fakes generally faked? Do they take a 1955 and try and stamp on top of it or do they make a whole new coin?
Knowing how they do it may help weed them out. Then again just send it to the slabbers !
