No worries, just walk in be polite and have exact change, you shouldn't have any trouble buying coins. You don't even need an account, in Canada anyways.
Getting rid of them is a different story, but as others have mentioned you can open an account somewhere else and just deposit coins into that account.
I'm sure you could then use your debit card to purchase new coins at another bank, or grab some cash etc.

xAgent,
You do not need a lot of money. just save untill you have 500 set aside specifically for boxes of halves. when you have that you can ask your bank to order rolls for you. you never really spend it it will essentially be your money... just rolled up in coins ;)

although thats true, I can also do what my aunt does and buy rolls of quarters from her bank every so often, but she doesn't cash them back in after searching them

She never cashes back in the quarters? that can get expensive. I just cashed back over 1600.00 worth of quarters in the past two days.

1. Dont crap where you eat (don't return where you buy.) 2. Don't educate tellers, it's none of their bidness what you are looking for. 3. Banks are not coin shops.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

The hay days of massive silver finds are all but over. Four years ago I was about the only person searching halves in my area. I could walk into a bank on any given day and walk out with anywhere from $60-$2000 in halves and have great success. Now I am lucky if I can get a single half dollar from a tray. Banks that were once flush with halves now have dozens of people wanting to be called if a roll comes in. Add newly educated tellers in the mix and it is not even worth the time anymore for me. I have moved closer to the source, and now hunt convenience stores with some success.
Note: If you decide to hunt convenience stores, you need to hunt in or near the shadier parts of town. That is where the good stuff is, including red and blue seal notes as well.

Tim- can you explain this statement more? "Note: If you decide to hunt convenience stores, you need to hunt in or near the shadier parts of town. That is where the good stuff is, including red and blue seal notes as well." why the shadier parts of town?

My guess would be the shadier parts of town because 1) more desperate and willing to spend anything for food 2) don't know what they are spending 3) stole it and don't know what they are spending

wish me luck, I went by 3 banks today and only 1 has half dollars so they told me to come back at 4 to wait for the vault person since I dont have an account, she said they had 90 dollars in rolls but I'm just gonna do 40 again since thats all I can really afford at the moment
i changed my mind, ill just do all 90 and put back in the bank what isn't good, I'm not losing money really so whats the harm
also, what hlaf dollars are NIFC? just any proofs if I come across any?

Like I said Agent, Its not like its going to be steady silver. You have no way of knowing if that 90 was deposited by by a fellow coin hunter or someone why decided they needed instant cash. It probably won't even pay gas as long as your playing with < $100. The idea is that you eventually cash in some valuable coins to fund a larger bank roll. The more you look at, the more you find.
The other thing to keep in mind...if its just about you finding free silver to make some extra cash...this isn't for you. Its a hobby that doesn't cost anything...and sometimes even makes a little money. People aren't getting rich doing this (though there are some who are trying).

i can see this being a hobby, only thing is that the rolls of half dollars are the same as quarters....10 dollars, of course you get more quarters in a roll, maybe I shouldve traded them in for quarters and look through quarters? my aunt said you can ask for customer rolled quarters so ill do that next I suppose

xAGENTxMULDERx pulling customer wrapped rolls from my local bank accomplished two things for me and am working on a third. 1: completed to circulated set of post-'64 quarters from the Denver and Philadelphia mints (no silver in albums but I did find some). 2: Completed a circulated set of State Quarters similiar to the above. 3: Working on a circulated ATB set similiar to the above to complement a proof set that is in process also. During the process of working on the circulated State Quarters I also found enough clean quarters to be classified as BU and are worthy neighbors to my State Uncirculated and Proof sets that I have been saving for awhile. I still don't have enough of the latter to fill up my books but I'm working on it. These circulated sets are basically free coins in that all a person (me) has to do is pull them from rolls without going into a coin shop to buy them there at much more than face. There is a time for doing that but not for current coins (in my estimation and frugality). You will find some silver but not in the quantities that you want. That's why I started the circulated sets as means of keeping my interest up and going. Good luck to you.

i do have to say that completing the State Quarter set was fun, theyre all circulated, I love the idea of you collecting post'64 quarters and collecting them just to have them kind of deal, you just added a whole new world of collecting to my interest. i did get my 40% 1966 half dollar from ebay today, and I had 20 dollars in Amazon credit from using my Amazon credit card and bought a 90%1964 half dollar, so a free 90% half dollar isn't too bad
