One evening in 2001 I was walking to my local Canada Safeway for some groceries. About 3 minutes away from the store, as I was walking into the mall parking lot, I saw one of their shopping carts, abandoned with a quarter still in the cart lockup box. Since I was walking there anyway, I decided to push the cart back to the store, lock it up and keep the 25c. I did so, and just after I stuck the quarter in my pocket, I paused, thinking, "Was that what I thought it was?!?" I pulled the quarter out again and took a better look, and sure enough, my eyes hadn't deceived me. It was a 1991 Canadian quarter (the scarce one). I hadn't found one prior to that, nor have I since.

When I was a kid we had an old house with a huge property behind us. After reading some comic books, we were convinced than an old Native American burial site was located on the property. Actually, it was a garbage dump from the house as in the old days they just dumped it in the woods. We dug, scared out of our minds as we "uncovered" strange rocks that outlined they burial site (they were just common boulders in the ground). We were sifting through the assorted buried metal cans and glass bottles. I found a coin. I went to my house and washed it off. it was a 1901 Indian cent. Not knowing much about coins at like age 8 or 9 I thought I found the rarest coin in the world, and further convinced us that "Indians" were in fact buried there. Never did find any more of those buried Indians.

These stories are great! I went through a cent roll last weekend in search of a wheat. Found nothing. Then I thought about the company truck. There's always change in the cup holder. The first coin on top of the pile was a 1958 wheat! Then I found a 1960 quarter. I was so happy!

When I was about fifteen, my dad gave me and my two sisters each an envelopole. The way I remember the story was that a guy owed him a favor. Inside each were 10 Morgan's. He explained that one was rarer than the others. He had just randomly distributed them into envelopes with our names. Guess who had the luck that day? It was me.
But wait, the story gets better. I was talking to my mom about a month ago and I mentioned the coins that dad had given us. She told me that they were actually my grandmother 's coins from when she owned her restaurant. She would put away any dollar coins that came in. How cool is that? I love the idea that these were saved and passed on. I will pass them on to my son so he can pass them to his little one...but not yet!

When I was a kid my parents bought a house that had been sitting empty for years, they took out the old couch and threw it on the burn pile. As it was burning you could see loose change falling out, I dug threw the ash pile the next day and pulled out a couple of mercs and Buffalo nickels. I lost or misplaced most of them over the years but I still have a few in my collection. You can tell them from the rest by the scorch marks from the fire.

Back when I was in my teens (10-15 years ago) I picked up a couple of rolls of half dollars. Every coin was at least a 40% silver. Went back to the bank and got more rolls, but no more luck. Still have the couple rolls of silver halves, they're worth a lot more now than when I found them.

Last week was shopping for Christmas in busy Union Square, San Francisco. Lying prettily on a busy sidewalk like a discarded token was a brand spanking new Denali-D quarter, my first 'circulation' find of this design. Everybody walked right over it. It was awesome and made my day.

I have actually found 2 Morgan $ at different times.
First time, I was a rookie Realtor that offered to clean out a house. In turn Imwas given everything left in the house. I got a holed Morgan, some cool coca cola memorabilia and a 1962 San Diego Chargers pennant.
Second time was in a house I bought 3 years ago at a foreclosure auction. I also found a really neat turquoise ring with a snake on the band.
Still have everything except the coke memorabilia.

Stopped at the recycle bins the other day to drop off a load of cardboard and such. When I opened the door to my truck I scanned the ground. Lo and behold, there lay a 1958 Wheat penny.

I work at a used car lot and trades come in with lots of change in the cupholders and ashtrays. In the last ten months I've accumulated nine clad bicentennial quarters. But the nice surprise was six or so weeks ago: mixed in with a handful of change was an old 14k religious medal. Brought it to my LCS and it's worth $89.90 melt! I never have that kind of luck and I didn't even know I had it until some time later when I was looking for old-date pennies in the mix. (P.S. the car came in from an out-of-state auction via another dealer; I didn't pocket it from someone I could locate.)

In 1981 (I think it was 1981) I was in an old warehouse and found an Canadian 1870 5 cent silver laying on the floor. A Canadian 1944 V nickel was laying on the ground in a Target parking lot. And these were found in the States, not Canada. Parked in a restaurant parking lot where there was some snow on the ground. In a snowbank was a pile of pennies....I picked most of them up and it was about 450. Someone must have dumped them there. Not coins...... but I was walking around at an outdoor car show in Wisconsin and found a wallet laying on the ground containing over $3000 in cash and credit cards, etc. Yes, I returned it to the owner.

This was about 35 years ago. I was working in a Circle K. I broke open a roll of quarters to put in the cash drawer and they were all silver. Set them aside and opened another roll from the safe. Same thing. Dug out all the quarter rolls in the safe. Out of 10 rolls, 8 were all silver. Not to many got in the cash drawer that night. Wasn't a bad haul. $80.00 in silver.

For my one cent.. My wife's Grandma had a piano, my wife's brother wanted the piano when she pasted, a couple of years he got this piano, it wasn't in real good shape, but he took it apart and cleaned it out, there was dirt, sticks, crayons and other garbage. He found this coin between some frames.. Grandma was 92, how long has this coin been there...
