Pertinax ... I long ago acquired a similar but larger counterstamp on the west side of our "pond." The host coin is an 1814 U.S. large cent. The cross-like design suggests to me the possibility of Knights Templar. Another possibility is perhaps some colonial era island possession. Meanwhile, pieces like these remain mysterious mavericks.

I have an 1826 Coronet Cent stamped with S.L. WAR does anyone know what S.L. War stands for or means....and any ideas on value...the grading is pretty bad on this coin...its worn but was wondering. Found this in an old flour sack with some old coins my husband has and none of the coin collectors in my family know the origins of S.L. WAR

Welcome to the CCF, Shenia Pellum. You've found a premium website for coin collectors here.

I ran a few searches for "S.L. WAR" and found no attribution clues whatsoever. I've been collecting and studying counterstamped coins for over thirty years now.

Brunk lists this same counterstamp known on a 1914 quarter (# W-152), so these are likely early 20th century issues. As I can't find "War" being used as a surname, the "S.L." may stand for the name of a country or countries that participated in a war? If this is the case, the large cent and quarter may have been stamped as mementos.

Maverick or unattributed counterstamps on common large cents will typically sell in the $20 range at present. Hope this helps.

Not sure if this is OK to post. Picked up in mixed lot. It's a dime.

If ever a counterstamp begged attribution, it's this one!!

The letter style suggests to me that it was a contemporary stamping. If so, the subject sharply contrasts with Victorian era social morays. In today's world, it's the name of a popular card game ...

Here's a pair of eagle counterstamps on Half Cents that have thus far defied attribution. Eagles were often used as logos by gunsmiths, silversmiths, pewterers and other early craftsmen. Perhaps, either or both of these marks will someday be identified by finding an antique product that bears a match ...
