A recent auction pickup, this silver shilling token dated 1804 -- very rare nowadays in any condition -- was issued by Clark & West, a noted goldsmiths and jewelry firm in Dublin, Ireland. The countermarks, also known as "cartouches," had a couple of purposes. First, their harp motifs rooted these "British shilling" pieces in Ireland; otherwise there was really nothing to distinguish them from any old silver shilling token circulating in England at the time. And second, these c/m's served as respected Clark & West hallmarks that essentially vouched for the token's silver content.

County Dublin, Dalton 1, RR.

Colombia 5 Centavos 1886 c/s T Q. Unlikely that the purpose of this counterstamp will ever be known.
