Quote: US 2 Cents 1865 c/s J A Thompson. Didn't find it in Brunk. The only reference to J A Thompson I could find online was an auction listing for a counterfeit coin detector (which was very cool and quite $$$). Excellent!

Now here's a truly useful counterstamp on a 1950-S cent. It's a modern punched "W" on the reverse. It was in one of the absurd number of bags of cents I snagged at an estate sale. I've been sorting the coins by date and mint for a lifetime two years. Think about it. This counterstamp makes it so easy to distinguish Wheat cents from Memorial cents by using just one punch, as long as the user remembers to rotate it correctly. In addition, this is the rare "broken W" variety, with the punch tilted slightly right and set right. *ducks and covers*
