barryg's Trade dollar Reverse reminds me of when Angelina Jolie showed quite a bit of leg on some awards program earlier this year (right leg exposed, left leg covered up)

Way to start off, BarryG!

Glad you like it, Moe! It's an upgrade of my worn out 1877 Trade dollar that I'll have to remember to post next week.

I am enjoying this thread, although I am trying not to be too hard on my Trade dollar (1877-S), but so far so good!

May I offer a few of my thoughts?
When I look at the obverse I see the following:

Miss Liberty, facing west towards Asia, the Pacific Ocean at her feet.
She holds the olive branch of peace.
To her back a sheaf of wheat, facing east, from the great grain belt of the central USA.
BUT, sitting on a stone wall, perhaps a barrier to any potential intrusion by foreign powers?

Sure, I would like to own one.
But not possible this week, nor next, nor in the near future.

Liberty is sitting on a bale of hay, I believe.

"The obverse depicts Miss Liberty seated on a bale of merchandise, her right hand holding a branch, her left hand holding a ribbon inscribed "LIBERTY, a sheaf of wheat behind, and the sea in front. IN GOD WE TRUST appears at the bottom just above the date. Stars surround the upper portion. The reverse depicts an eagle holding three arrows and a branch, with E PLURBUS UNUM on a ribbon above, 420 GRAINS, 900 FINE, below. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and Trade dollar surrounds."

Beg to differ, Hate to Wait, Miss Liberty's bottom is squarely on the stone wall and the sheaf of wheat is leaning on the wall and perhaps also resting along side her belt line.

Agree to disagree Matt, I will stick with "seated on a bale of merchandise". It looks like a "hay bale" to me.

I think it depends on the quality of the strike and the wear. On Moe's example, it certainly does look like a brick wall. On my example, however, you can clearly see ropes holding the "seat" together which would indicate a bale of hay cotton.

Since cotton is a general theme (i.e., bolls in Liberty's Coronet on Morgans). Don't know how much hay we exported but we sure did ship out a lot of cotton... PG

I am going to say it is a bale of cotton. It may be surprising, but I do have some experience with cotton.

Liberty must have been "one heck of a woman" if she was sitting on one of these cotton bales!
