Well I'll certainly keep you in mind, A-noob (thanks for having my back) ...

In all honesty, since we don't have any kids of our own, unless one of my nieces or nephews shows an honest interest in numismatics (which hasn't surfaced, yet), I am making very sure that I am documenting what I paid for each of my coins, what the "book-value" (or approx for ancients) is currently for each of my coins ... plus, I am getting my more valuable ancients authenticated, to assist whoever (my wife) when it comes time to unload my collection ...

... at least that way, I will have had an awesome time collecting them, "and" the person that inherits them will have an easy time either learning and adding to my collection, or an easy time selling the collection for as small a loss as possible!!

... man, when I actually write it down, it's a bit of a sad story, eh?

Anoob, when your baby is born you have to let us know. I don't smoke any more, but I'll light up a cigar for you. I hope and pray for an easy birth and a healthy child.

Congrats on the baby anoob. Hope all goes well. Maybe we could have a a special smackdown edition featuring children or babies on coins to commemorate the event? Not sure if there are that many coins with childer on them, but there's bound to be a few. Isn't there?

Good idea, Bing ...

You must be getting very excited, eh A-noob?

Awwww, just think => having a little baby stevex6 running around your house ... accidentally getting into your wine and then getting baby-poop all over your ancient coins (it brings a tear to your eye, don't it?) ...

just jokes => and like Bing already stated => I wish you guys all of the luck and happiness in the world!!

Steve- I am so excited I am nauseous! All I ever wanted in life was to get pooped, and pee'd on! I realized that I didn't need to have a baby in order to obtain the latter. I have the Bassinet, Crib and toys ready to go. At this point I just want her to have the baby. my wife and her mother are driving me mad. I read almost anything I can get my hands on when it comes to stuff I am interested in and well, my advice for future fathers out there..."don't read about what can go wrong" -it will make you sick to your stomach. Thanks for the support guys. Believe me I don't know the first thing about being a parent, I spent my childhood, circumnavigating my parents, disregarding everything they ever told me, and getting into all sorts of "shenanigans" . At 13 my mother invoked a curse on me, "I hope when you have kids, they will be just like you." Well, looking back, I'm sooo sorry, please release the curse. Please! I am sure it will come full circle. Now-a-days can you prosecute a 10yr old for steeling a 1987 Buick Skylark. I think you can? Oh' the licking I received!

We reap what we sow my friend. Hehe

Honestly, don't worry about knowing what to do, it will come naturally. I have two great sons, and trust me, I knew nothing about being a parent, or for that matter, even being an adult at the time. I was just barely 20 years old when my first son was born and I was in Vietnam when the second was born. Somehow I managed.

I doubt having children was the least of your worries, being wet in that God forsaken jungle, with the snakes, traps, leaches, enemies and God only knows whatever else. Cudos, JW for coming back in one piece when so many did not. Now it seems we just stand around and get blown up, and shot at, and call it an occupation.

Great thread, interesting discussion.

A lot of it chimed true to myself.

Quote:
Question anything enough and you have to conclude that most things are pointless.

Quote:
Well, I plan on never dying, so it's a moot point to me.

Quote:
It is a strange relationship that I have with this hobby. I don't consider myself a numismatist.

Collecting anything is ultimately pointless, to be honest, analyse anything at all too much and you can reach this conclusion. I, either fortunately or unfortunately believe were just highly evolved monkeys hurtling through space on a rock thats ultimately dying. It kinda puts things in perspective

Are ancients an investment, very probably not. As a hobby though its a good choice, if you play golf once a week it might cost you $50 that you can never get back. Buy a coin for $50 and enjoy it and you have not really 'spent' the money, just converted it. At any time you can covert it back, in that sense I see ancients as a pretty much free hobby.

It is indeed a hobby for the soul, dont let anyone else tell you what you should be collecting as everyone is different and no matter how experienced somebody is it does not mean they are 'right' and you are 'wrong' with regards to this. Opinions are like ?*/%£$&? (a certain part of a persons anatomy I cant mention in a family forum!), everybody has one and most peoples stink!

This is ultimately a hobby, no more, no less:

Quote:
A hobby is a regular activity or interest that is undertaken for pleasure, typically done during one's leisure time.

Some people seem intent on sucking the pleasure out of it, not sure why. If it makes you happy, keep doing it, if not, maybe you should try golf

Forgot to add - Congrats and good luck with the baby Ancientnoob, hope all goes well for you and yours. Having children is one one the few things in life that is not 'pointless' this will enrich your soul more than any / every ancient coin ever could.
