I see my phone camera has been set to 'Beauty Enabled' (whatever that means). I'm sure this makes for corker portraits and landscape shots but possibly is not so good for coin photography. This setting may explain the odd nature of the photos I've recently uploaded.
Doh!
PS: on uploading the photos of Montagu 15 I spotted the tiny speck of verdigris beginning to develop below Mary's bust line. This has now been dealt with.

Another shilling of Charles I. This one later in the reign, at the point that Parliament took control of the mint at the Tower of London. Spink 2800, Sharp G1/2. The (P) privy mark dates it to 29 May 1643-15 Jul 1644. Quality control at the Mint was pretty poor by this time, with all efforts on producing coin in the quantities required and so better examples on a decent sized flan are very difficult to find. Ex B R Osborne. Not the easiest coin to photograph (particularly on a phone!) but I've done my best, plus auctioneers photo.   Quite pleased with this one, despite the weaknesses. My apologies, it's so shiny getting a decent photograph with my phone is proving more difficult than I'd expected. I have given up trying to get a decent picture of my coins if I use my mobile with flash, so I always try to take these pics in decent daylight. However, I now also use an inexpensive digital microscope whenever possible that has its own illumination that can be altered accordingly. I do have to use an extended stand though, for all coins larger than a hammered penny, otherwise I cannot fit the coin into the available picture space. Frank |

Tom, that obverse is fantastic.
I have half a dozen or more Charles I shillings but none have portrait detail as good as that one. A scarce MM and no clipping too. Superb.

That shilling is delicious. Much better condition than ones I see up for sale that don't have very large bids associated with them.  I won a couple of nice Victorian Florins today at auction. I'm not usually a big fan of the older Victoria 'heads' but in this case both the condition and the price were right so home they go. The luster cartwheels nicely, a bit more so on the Jubilee coin, but the latter of the two also has a little bit of color on the reverse whereas the Jubilee coin is largely un-toned. A nice pair of Viccy florins there, however, the 1898 has been overgraded. That obverse isn't even EF.

I am going off the US grade estimate (AU55 and AU50 respectively) from the seller and I know the British grading system is different and much stricter so I will solicit opinions as to how they would grade in their homeland. Maybe one day the ANA will offer a seminar on how to grade British coins! (And German coins too, my other interest.) Like, to me, a British EF is much nicer than a lot of US EF and AU coins, or so it seems a lot of the time. I don't really like to "slab" coins for grading so feedback is always welcomed given my complete lack of knowledge in the area. All these bronzes and 17th century shillings and the rest make my latest pile of worn halfcrowns look like a joke!  Many of these will be in the flesh on the way back thread. I bought these a week ago and have the following 1887 gVF, 1888 G, 1889 VG, 1891 aVG, 1896 VG, 1899 aFine, 1900 VG, 1901 VG+, 1906 gVG, 1907 Fine (Cleaned), 1908 gVG, 1922 (with groove) - gVF, 1937 aVF (But cleaned  ) 1938 aVF. Still I paid the equivalent of £120 for all of them and now I have 84 different UK halfcrowns, complete date set from 1906 to 1958 (Except 1952 obviously). Time to cool it a bit with the Half crown accumulating and before the Golden Jubilee, they get a lot harder!  PS they arrived in these holders, all my coins go into Mylar flips before they get albummed. These holders go straight in the recycling. Edited by Princetane
