Lols ty bud believe it or not my better coins come from my profits from coins I pay very little for but spend a lot of time hunting for. I am an error/variety hunter. Then I rehome them to collectors for a modest profit on my outlay. It's very time consuming and a lot of dud coins come and go but when the real deal does come along it makes up for all the disappointments along the way. I mean they are rare for a reason so every time I sell one I reinvest it into better standard coins. The George IV Penny Was the most expensive purchase but I bought it because it is an unlisted error 1826/1 so come the time I move that on it will make a handsome dividend to reinvest :). Well that's the plan

Here's a not-so-authentic 1820-dated half crown (contemporary counterfeit) struck in brass and silver-washed or more likely tinned. The counterfeiters did a decent enough job, complete with a milled edge, but it's a full gram underweight when compared to a regal example (13.1 vs. 14.1) and rings like brass instead of silver. There's obviously damage from where people were testing the coin (divots, scratches and cuts.) Similar counterfeits exist for half crowns and shillings from near the end of George III's reign, and some of them can be linked by common features (weight, composition, die artifacts) hinting at the possibility of shared origins. This is not a beautiful coin, but it is numismatically interesting, at least to me. ps. Edward VII Florins are my favorite British coin design pretty much ever, and the ones posted just above me are certainly stunning exemplars for the type! Thanks for posting the 1820 halfcrown, paralyse! Those contemporary forgeries are fascinating. This arrived yesterday - the first in the series of Winnie the Pooh 50p coins. Apologies for awful photos taken through the Mint packaging...   Edited by NumisRob

I agree Paralyse that halfcrown is cool and has a lot of historic value. I wonder if it successfully passed back then and someone got 2/5 real change from buying something that cost a penny with it. NumisRob that 50p coin , all I can say - is he really luvs hunny. Meanwhile another Florin upgrade arrived yesterday, a good VF 1931, not an easy coin to find in this condition.   I know life is good, when I am already upgrading coins I bought a few weeks ago. There is definitely more wear here on this one than my 1929 and 1930 coins and especially noticeable on the king, but a huge imporvement on the barely Fine coin it is replacing (Well I am keeping that anyway). Lovely florin, Pincetane and great shilling, zookeeperz! Got this yesterday from my LCS - an upgrade 1797 penny:   These coins are incredibly common but getting a nice circulated one without too many edge bumps is quite a challenge! |

Nice clean coin and its also missing all the usual pitting you find with more average examples.
It was a classic design and very well used in its era.

Nice Cartwheel Rob. Amazes me how The worn coins edges survived yet the ones in better condition were fraught with bumps and gouges .  . Latest addition UNC/ABU 1825 George IV Silver .925 sixpence. Coin is so lustrous I had real difficulty getting a decent picture so you'll have to excuse my amateur photographic skills. A case of diffused lighting was needed.  |

The halfcrown was a pretty common coin in the 1960s and early 1970s. No-one minded terribly much giving change from it. There wasn't much you could buy for a penny (4 small chewy sweets ) and the kids that bought them wouldn't often have a halfcrown, so it wasn't a problem. What shopkeepers did mind was giving change from a pound note to someone buying something for 6d or a shilling. |
