I did notice that coin...

First we got a Kilo colorized night coin with low mintage, I believe the finish was just regular bullion coin..

now this proof kilo coin. I too am not too sure about the "puzzle look"... I dunno just looks odd and hey, I really like this series.

I do like the idea that its proof tho.

My biggest issue tho is, I just I dunno, at this point I really dont want to buy a big chunk of silver nor 1 oz gold coin until I know where prices are going with silver and gold. To me, I would either see prices rise and go higher OR at least finally find a floor.. until then tho I really dont want to spend money on coins like this.

Finally, one dealer on ebay originally had this coin listed for 1750.... then he jacked it up within a week to 2750 or best offer.. I wonder if dealers are sensing or seeing demand is strong...

Looks like the Golden Enigma series has now moved to include the Somalian elephants....

I just noticed this last week and have pre-ordered one since I still collect this series and is a favorite of mine.

Here is a link in case anyone is interested-

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-Golden...em2a4faffbf2

On another note, I continue to hold out on the kilo coins. Its interesting and glad I have not budged on buying a kilo elephant yet as the prices from MCM are now dropping more than when silver was higher.

I wont be buying any type coin like that or gold until either prices stop falling OR go higher. It just doesn't make sense to me since dealers wish to play with the prices. I been tracking MCM prices versus spot and APMEX and since they decide to play games as how to their prices are tied to spot and price action is the game I excel at, they wont be making coin on me as they would like lol

Can all you Somali Elephant collector's do me a favor when you can, take a peek at your 1 Oz. PROOF coins, and, look at the beads under G in SHILLING....Proof coins only...I ask, as I have a 2015 Fractional set(2 Oz, 1 Oz, 1/2 Oz, and 1/4 Oz), where the beads not only are much different on the 1 Oz(flat tops, with frosting, compared to non-frosted pointed "bullets" as beads on the others), and, 2 beads right under the G are goofy...smaller, not a match to the rest of the beads).
I look forward to your answers, whether from 2015 coins, 2014, 13, whatever...I hoping this may be an error. The last pic shows the normal "bullet" shaped beads on my 2 Oz.
Thanks
Calvin

I am stalking somalian 1 oz gold coins from earlier years as gold drops. I havent bought anything for a long time as I see no reason to buy these until prices in the PM market resolve themselves.

One great thing about this downtrend has been watching prices drop....and that is great for a somalian elephant coin collector such as myself.

Hello Yup,

I'm sorry if you've provided this information earlier, but do you know when they started to release the Somalian Elephant 4 coin proof silver sets in its current configuration of (2 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz)? The earliest I can find is 2012? Did they release any prior to 2012?

Also, do know when they started to release the Somalian Elephant Gold proof sets? Did these start to be released in 2015?

Thanks a bunch!

@Gmgn101

first welcome to the forum, glad to have you as a member!

Well right now I dont have all my notes and files on these sets so I am going off the top of my head here. However, I believe they did have sets before 2012, as I have a 2010 set I bought off ebay and if memory serves me right I found over times sets from the start of this series.

I believe if you go through the thread some other member has shared info on these sets, I believe it was Bekiz?

As far as somalian elephant gold proof sets, I dont believe they have solid gold proof sets, I know they have offered two very small fractional sizes in gold and also a 5 oz gold proof coin with a very limited mintage.

If you have an example of the gold proof set let me know, I'd like to see them as I havent but perhaps I am may have missed it. I have however seen smaller gold fractional gold proof coins with years from the start of this somalian elephant series.

In any case, this is a fun series to collect with various finishes and sizes, it is one of the few coins I am collecting for now.

Hi Yup,

Thanks so much for welcoming me to the forum. I have no where near the expertise you have in the elephants, but from my humble research I think the elephants are a good coin/series to collect.

The mintages are much lower than the Eagles, Maple Leafs, Phil's, etc. I lean a bit more towards gold for stacking/collecting. The Libertads and Elephants are the coins/bullion that most intrigues me.

From what I can tell the Bavarian West Mint released a 4 coin gold proof set this year, which is limited to 300 sets. I'll see what more I can dig up :-)

@Gmgn101

Well, I know some things but like everyone else, I am still learning about the Somalia elephants but I have tried my best to learn as much as possible and share the knowledge. The more we come together and share about this series, the more folks will get interested and enjoy collecting the series.

I agree with you tho, this is such a great series to collect and they are produced rather well for a bullion coin. I have been disappointed with some of the proof issues in the past tho, such as the high relief somalia elephant, I didnt have success with those, and I tried many so I gave up sadly on those

I even bought a slabbed one from MCM that was a 70 and MCM would not take it back even tho they sold it to me with milk spots on the coin and other blemishes, very disappointed in the production quality there AND in MCM for not accepting it back even tho its not bullion but in their eyes it is.

However, no series is perfect and despite these minor faults I still am a big fan of this series and the depiction of the elephant on the coin.

The mintages are lower on these, tho I havent been able to gather numbers and I would guess that in the most recent years as of late they have increased the mintage numbers. For some time they even where higher priced than pandas but that has turned around recently.

I would love just for fun buy a roll of elephants but I have held off because of the continued downward move in silver that I would rather just wait.

A four coin proof gold set.. wow thats great to hear. I have been wondering when/if we would see that, and thats great! About time!!

Looks like the 2016 design is out and its pretty much exactly like the 2009 design. Not much effort put into this one....haha

Yup, I agree, not much effort. This series must be getting long in the tooth.

It is a shame and I will continue to support it as it has elephants, a theme I greatly enjoy and like. However, looks like the best years are farrrr behind it.

I've been collecting both the BU 1 oz silver and 4-coin fractional proof set in silver. Not obsessed with having every coin, but I do like the series, although I do NOT like colorized coins, given their after-market changes and I just do not feel that the colorizing is going to hold up over time. I have the whole series (at least one of each) in BU and in addition the MS70 graded bullion coins from 2013-2016. My only exception to this is I purchased the 2015 Somali 'Antique' finished coin because of its beauty. And this coin is limited to 5500 minted.

I do like low mintages. As well as coins that will hold up over time, together which often end up being the most valued to own. Has anyone discussed the 2012-2015 Somali Elephant Privy coins, limited to only 3-5K per year? The privy is based upon the lunar year, so it goes: Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram and the privy is on the reverse side of the coin with the same elephant design of that year. The privy seal is predominately placed on the upper right side of the coin, noticeable, but not really obscuring the rest of the coin.

Someone also asked about the Proof Sets: I have the 2014 and 2015 fractional proof sets and am looking for the 2013. I have seen references to a 2012 year series, but no luck in finding one for sale. Given that the fractional proof sets are limited to 2K/year, I'd expect the older ones to be really hard to find.

ALERT: Mint Error? Someone in the business sent me a picture showing a 2015 Somalia Elephant Mule Counterstamp

This coin was struck accidentally with a die intended for the gold coin, so shows AU on the coin, which was then over-stamped with the letters "AG". Of the 2015 Somalia Elephant coins minted, 1500 of these coins were struck in error. 1000 of those were melted, so only 500 of these coins are in existence. As of 7/9/15, NGC had only graded 222 of these coins in MS69, with none graded MS70. I don't particularly like mint errors, but thought I should pass it on. And of course, this coin is ridiculously overpriced (like $1000). Kinda distaste when we reward coin manufacturers more for their mistakes than there successes?

Attached is a picture from the 2015 Somali Elephant reverse where they struck 1500 coins of the silver, but used the gold die instead. 1000 were destroyed, and 500 ended up in the hands of GovMint.com. Don't appeal to me, but if your pockets can tolerate the add'l cost, and mint error coins appeal to you - go for it. You'll see the coin was struck first with the gold die, then with the silver die in a futile attempt to cover up the mistake. I hope someone lost their job at the Bavarian State Mint!

Andrew, allow me to welcome you to the forum!

We are glad you are here and I appreciate you sharing you interest, knowledge and more info regarding the Somalian elephant series.

I am with you, I am not interested in owning every single variation of this coin and I really havent gone back to trace every coin in this series, even from its start, tho I would not mind owning at least getting the coins in their BU release from the start.

I do like the colored coins but I only like the day/night sets. It seems a big too much tho with what they are doing but then again, if it brings more people into collecting this series, I dont mind. I like you, I broke down and added the antique finish coin after finding them for auction, its a very nice finish and one I really like.

I believe I saw someone talking about this on another unrelated thread on another forum or blog, about the error coin. Not sure I want to pony up the money for that lol

The one privy that kind of interests me is the recent Chicago ANA privy for 2015
