Over the years I have gone through 10,000 or so uncleaned coins and this was the only rare one that I've come across. So I was thrilled.

A lot of them were culls and very low grade. Gave a bunch away and sold a bunch too. I have a little over 600 in my collection and about another 300 or 400 that I still need to attribute.

Novice question, why are these late empire coins so hard to find in nice condition? augustus1 yours are the nicest I have seen compared to what I see in dealers inventory.

The simple answer is because the empire was in decline and only a small amount of coins were being struck. Base metal coinage had little to no value. `

And they wore down quickly.

When I finally found that first Marcian I posted, I was in London at Baldwin's and they knew it was very remarkable and priced it accordingly. Now, years later, I am still happy I bought it. Sometimes an outstanding coin is worth the extra cost.

There are only ten emperors left and they are rare to extremely rare. So with this post this thread has reached the end. Would love to see some of these rare emperors here. The last line-up is: Libius Severus, Anthemius, Olybrius, Leo II, Glycerius, Julius Nepos, Zeno, Romulus Augustus, Basiliscus, and Leontius.
I want to thank Bing and Jerry for starting this thread. I also want to thank all of you for posting all your great coins and keeping this thread going.
I've enjoyed being one of the host, and hope that you all enjoyed this thread.
