That was the result of all the hoarded coinage coming back from hoarding and outside the country creating a glut of unneeded coinage piling up in the Treasury. That unneeded coin was melted down as raw material for new coin. Report this Post to the Staff

It's been discussed as a reason for low survivability of cents fromm the 1870s. Report this Post to the Staff

I trust this dealer; if I had the money, I would have bought it. I suspect I will see it again at the fall coin show... And with my luck, it will be in a slab and have a higher price.
