Possibly my latest acquisition. Looks XF to me, with a possible old cleaning and retoning. Would get it slabbed, but fear the body bag - maybe ANACS? What do you think?

I think it's either VF-35 or XF-40. The bit of weakness in the B of LIBERTY and a bit of wear on the edge of the scroll might keep it from a full XF-40. It does look like there's a cleaning in its distant past; despite that, it's a really nice-looking coin IMO.

ANACS it is. Definite cleaning. Will it get XF? Perhaps. I'd call it XF-40 cleaned since it looks from the stars on the right, the hair, and the letters on the shield like a strike issue. Are those scratches near her face?

Hey Okie,
I'd agree it has XF details but it is definitely cleaned. The surfaces have that uniform washed-out look that I associate with over-dipping. If you like it anyway it might still be OK for your type set. Just don't pay "original coin" money for this one!

Hi all. Thanks for the comments. I did buy it and can return it if it really looks funky in hand. It was expensive as all in this series are, but I paid VF-30 money for it, not XF. Not sure what looks "over dipped" about it, but I agree that it has been dipped at least once. I thought it looked ok for my 7070 compared to many of the ANACS slabbed XF Details-Cleaned Seated dollars I have watched on Heritage and ebay go for $400 or $500 smackers.. I'd rather have a dipped/retoned one in my album, than a bright shiny scrubbed with abrasions, cleaned dollar coin. Besides it is all water under the bridge today as I became a Grandfather for the first time Monday. Welcome to the world little Anna. I ordered her a 2007 Silver Eagle Proof from the mint today. Oh yeah - this Seated dollar completes the 7070 (except gold) if I decide to keep it. Peace.

All right! Congratulations! Mostly for your granddaughter but a little bit for finishing your 7070. I've got 4 more coins to go, and hopefully a few years before grandparenthood. All the best to you!

I don't know if that coin is really a full XF. The obverse shows choice VF+ wear. The rims are a little dinged up, too.

okie--I am missing the 20 cent piece, one half dollar commemorative (I'm trying for a 1926 Vermont since I grew up there), and the two Liberty Quarters. I'd rather not just get space fillers, but wait until the right coin comes along. I also recently added the gold page but I have only one of those and I'm calling that the "extra credit" page.

Well Half, you already have most of the tough ones except for the Twenty Cent Piece. I looked long and hard for a true VF-20 with no problems and than paid close to $200 for it. Most of the circulated Twenty Centers out there are pretty well damaged and way over priced. I tried to only consider VF grade at a minimum for all the 7070 types and except for the Classic Head Large Cent, I got that or better. Most have not been obviously cleaned, but this dollar is an exception. I can imagine in the future doing some gradual upgrading of the VF and below coins as I find good pieces at shows and other locations. along the way adding the gold page (like you I have only one). I would like XF to be the minimum some day for all the coins. In about a week or two I will have everything in the album, including a group of coins I need to crack out of slabs, and I will post pictures. I think this type set is an exciting representation of US Coin art through the history of this country and a really cool thing to own. Peace.

I realize this might seem like bragging, but what the heck...
I have 13 20-cent pieces now (2 1875-P, 4 1875-S, 3 1875-CC 4 1876-P), including one Proof. I'm obsessed with the series!

You're right, they're very difficult to locate in unmessed with and problem free condition. Only one of mine (the 1875-S slider) has been messed with at all...it was overdipped. The S-mint coin is not difficult to find in a nice VF+ condition. Heck, my local coin store actual had a great one that I saw yesterday, but I don't want another S-mint right now.

One day soon, I'd like to do a picture collage of all of my 20-centers and post it on these boards.

Hey Prethen - nothing wrong with bragging. Part of the reason we are on this forum. Please post pictures of your Twenty Cent Pieces. You must be part of the reason they are scarce - you have all the good ones!

Well, I do take off any nice eye-appealing ones off the market if I happen onto them. Perhaps not all of them. I don't have that much disposable income. Any circulated Philly mint though will get me to scrutinize it quite closely for a possible purchase. The UNC stuff I tend to stay away from due to the higher dollar amounts.

I have to get the coins out of the bank and do some proper scans of them for the collage. I will try to do that soon.

Okie,

I thought that you were bought that 1871 SL dollar certified by ICG?
Were you picking up this one in addition, or instead of that one?

That one had a motto and I did buy it.. This is a different type with no motto.
