awesome find! I am a kiwi, every time I see a $2 coin I turn it over in hope of seeing 1997 at the bottom. So far I have had around 20 exciting experiences and purchased around 30 SA mint $2nz coins. My exciting finds all total a value of a lot less than your one find! I would probably have passed out if I seen your mule in change! Luck is one thing, patience and knowledge is another. Well done, pubbrad.

I see that the 1997 $2 coins were meant to be recalled - how come?

As far as I know,,, they weigh less than the standard NZ $2 coin, the ridge around the outside is off centre and they are not a deep enough strike. 1997 was the first year South Africa minted our $2 coin, they did another run of NZ $2 coins in SA 1998. The 1998 coins were fine and I presume (but have never researched) SA would of had to mint them all at their own cost? I wonder how many are still in circulation, I know every time one ends up at a bank it is destroyed. Urban myth says they are worth $50 to $100 each; reality is they are [I think] worth around $10 to $12 each. I have friends in the retail industry who scan their tills for me and swap 1997 $2 coins for normal ones, I pay them $6 a coin (mates rates!) and my sister in-law $2 a coin because she's awesome! :) It's not often I get them, but, my mate I ran into this morning said he has some for me but will wait and txt me when he has 10. This pleases me!
