LOL, perhaps I should just watch and learn instead of participating in this thread. Someone has given the correct answer-- I think-- but I am confused about Greek vs Roman names.

The coin shows Venus and Cupid/Aphrodite and Eros.

I picked this coin from wildwinds.com and read the attribution, which lists the deities' Greek names. But when I read other resources about Greek deities and their Roman counterparts, it seems that different names are used.

For instance, if Greek Aphrodite = Roman Venus, why does is the attribution for this Roman coin list the Greek name instead of Roman name?

Here's the coin and attribution

Guess-The-Gods?

Quote:
Pisidia, Antioch. Gordian III. 238-244 AD. Æ 34mm (23.12 gm). Radiate, draped and
cuirassed bust right / Aphrodite seated right, holding palm, Eros at feet, prow
behind him. Krzyzanovska I/2; SNG Copenhagen 72. VF, dark brown patina, with traces
of earthen encrustation.

So Whizb4ng, you're up.

I will see what I can find.

I am unsure why they would use the Greek names. I mean the inscription is in Latin. Many people do it as a matter of preference since they have become interchangeable.

It is a Roman period tetradrachm from Alexandria. The standard references refer to this deity as Athena though in general there is no difference between depictions of Roma, Athena and Minerva.
