Cool Aureus. That is definitely a little more pricey than I will ever be able to afford!

Outwardly this coin appears to be 100%, but there is one thing that bothers me about it. Out of the three types of metal the Romans used, Bronze (base metal), Silver, and Gold they put the most attention in insuring that their gold coins met a higher standard. To have a gold coin struck off center as this one IMO is not very common. I am probably wrong but IMO I would need an experts opinion before I would be happy that the coin is real.

And ..... He has that smile. Usually (not always) Nero has a rather fearsome look about him. That and the exaggerated 'fatso' appearance. On some of his coins one wonders why the die engravers didn't trim off a few pounds on his neck area.
I am skeptical of all gold coinage as I have seen too many 'dynamite' fakes. You probably found this one yourself which would make it real enough to you. Unfortunately (really really) I wasn't there to witness the thrill of it.

I am curious, why post your coin you are super happy about then say you sold it the next day? Are you a dealer? What's the point? If you want to advertise sales there is a spot for that on the forum.

This one is the most common of the Nero gold types. I have seen a few of these over three decades.
As far as 'off centre strike' is concerned, I have no problems.
Nevertheless, very high quality fakes of these exist. Artificial wear helps to hide suspicious features.

The Romans certainly did put more effort into ensuring that aureii met current weight and purity standards. More attention was also paid to die cutting.

Here, the design barely fits on the flan, and it is perhaps not surprising that the hammer man got this one slightly wrong.

$5,000 seems to be a high price to pay for this coin in this condition. I would think more like $1,500.
