Quote: Now that I'll have this sweet SLR camera thinking I should buy a regular lense but not sure what to get. Looking at a Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 as they are under a hundred bucks.
That's a nice little lens for the money. Look into the "kit" 18-55 that comes with Rebel cameras, as well - people buy the camera and then dump the kit lens for cheap, and it's excellent value for the money. So is the 55-250 at about $200 new, maybe the biggest bang-for-buck in the Canon line.

I agree, I used the 18-55mm while I was getting used to my camera and you can get nice images with it. Here's a comparison shot with the 18-55mm and the El-Nikkor. You can see that the El-Nikkor is a bit sharper, but if the price is right a 18-55mm is a good buy like Dave said.

Yup that was the auction I won! Thanks for not bidding ;) Think my max bid was $40 and I got it for $22. I used Gixen to place a bid with 6 seconds left which worked good in this instance.

Ok, I went ahead and bought a new 18-55 kit lens from a US ebay seller for $109 http://r.ebay.com/41dQs0Bought some 32GB Sandisk extreme microSD cards for $25 from Bestbuy. They have SD adapters but the micro can work with my phone or USB fob. Got a $10 tripod at Fry's and two $10 Ikea LED. Well I can't wait to try this stuff out. The lens brings my camera parts total to $374 which is what scares me about this hobby as I don't want to get carried away buying things. Heck I'm already looking at the basic 75-300 telephoto lenses from the same seller at $115+. But this should be a pretty fun setup now and if I ever lose interest I think it'll have solid resale value.

For a longer zoom, you want the Canon 55-250 over the 75-300. Buy it used/Refurb and you can have one for less than $175. The 55-250 is a well-kept secret; in the last year Canon has raised the price on a new one from $200 to $300 by way of recognizing that its' quality far exceeded the price. Now, post pics.

Just won a Nikkor 55mm AI F/3.5 with a Nikon M2 Extension tube for $60US ($68CAD) shipped. I think that's a good price, says that combination will get 1:1 macro.

The 55/3.5 Micro is one of the best lenses around for Dollars. The focal length is pretty short, but for Dollars the working distance is decent so you can get lights in there. For smaller coins, the working distance is very short given the large diameter of the lens, so it's pretty hard to use for Cents or Dimes. If you do mostly Dollars, it's a good choice...Ray

Got the 2nd lens combo I was looking for. Paid a little more then I was looking for though...
Vivitar Series 1 70-210MM Nikon (1st version - Kiron) with case and Hoya filter = $63CDN Vivitar 2X Macro Focusing (Nikon mount) = $55CDN
I'm pretty sure the 70-210mm gets 1:1 macro with the 2x macro focusing.
I'll probably keep an eye out for a cheap el-nikkor 75mm and maybe the 50mm, but I should be satisfied with these 2 lens combos for now.

Ahh yes, but WE will only be satisfied once we start seeing some pics from the setup.
You will be able to get 1:1 with the 70-210 +2XMTC at 70mm, maybe a bit longer. I don't think you'll quite get there at 210 but that's too long anyway...

Complete DSLR noob question... If a picture comes out all black with a VERY feint outline of the coin, does that mean there's not enough light? I just got the 55mm lens in the mail and tested it and that was the outcome, yet I tried a quick picture with the 18-55mm AF-S lens that came with my camera, it came out fine. Not sure if theres something different you need to do between manual and automatic lenses.

If you're using a Canon DSLR, set the camera knob to Av mode. Then adjust the aperture manually to f8, and all should work well...Ray

Ok thanks, I'm using a Nikon D3300, but I'll play around with it to find how to do it.

I think it's A mode on the D3300 but might be Av as well. Some Nikons won't meter properly without an auto lens attached, but the D3300 might do fine...Ray
