The 1980 is different. It was struck by two reverse dies (not sure how this could happen?) The OP's coin is a mirrored Brockage.

@ eddio... It is to my understanding that the coin you show is a back door job from the mint. A mint employee used a new die and and old die to strike that coin.
In any event, I would like to own it but not for the attached price tag.

The 2006 cent is an in-collar, first-strike brockage. Canadian cents are struck with the reverse die acting as the hammer die. Therefore, what happened was that a newly-struck cent remained behind in the collar while a fresh planchet (your coin) was fed on top of it.

The strongly finned rim and the coin's presumed normal weight clearly establish its authenticity. Therefore slabbing will not, in my opinion, add all that much to its market value. As to what that value might be, a 1974 Canadian quarter with the same sort of error recently sold on ebay for $506. A 1962 Canadian cent with a similar error recently sold for a $300 Buy-It-Now price. That coin was NOT struck in-collar, but nevertheless showed virtually no expansion because striking pressure was abnormally low.

As for the 1980 cent that was referenced by Eddio, this is almost certainly a double-struck pseudo-mule:

o-train personally I would not sell yet if anything I would keep it with no more pennies your Chance of finding another like this one is next to none,,as for the back door coins they should be confiscated by the mint these coins pop up every 10 years or so someone payed someone to get these ,,

I agree Eddio, I don't plan on selling. I think this is the type of coin that if I show non coin collectors it gets them asking questions and maybe more interested in numismatics. It's already made me more interested in collecting small cent errors and varieties. I know I'll likely never find anything comparable again but it sure helps my motivation for coin roll hunting.

O-train's mirror brockage appeared in last week's Coin World (March 17, 2014). It has apparently not been placed in the public domain, so you'll need a digital subscription to view it.
