I read that there is frosting where there shouldn't be on some coins. Apparently above the sails below the first rope above the sails! I will post pics for all to see and discuss Thanks    Edited by coinzchange

There was mention of a flag variant (ship in backround at bottom left) around the time it came out.

Can't remember exactly where I read about this variety. But that is interesting about the flag variant. What exactly is the differences between what would be classed as reg. and a variety. If you have a pic, that would be great to see it.

I wonder how this variation comes about? Is this because of a different die or is it something that happens during striking? I have seen the frosted sail being sold on e-bay for a premium by who I consider to be a reputable seller.

Hi folks! Sorry for the delay. I've checked my "Shannon" and I don't see anything that might be considered a variety of defect. Looking at this coin I remember how impressive it is. Also all the sails are frosted. I don't see a flag on a ship in the background on the left because there is none. There is a ship on the right but it has no visible flag. Perhaps my eyes have failed me... |

Wow, I was using a 60x loop and I still had a hard time seeing the flag/no flag....I won't be using my time searching for this 'variety' if that's what you would like to call it. However, the extra frosting in the sails is much easier to identify and I had some interesting results. I searched one roll and found 2 with nice frosting in the area where it shouldn't be, and 3 that had some very light frosting in the same area. Here are my examples, 1st is the normal no frosting, 2nd with frosting, and 3rd with light frosting. Sorry photos are little over exposed.    |

Hi Fed, you mentioned searching only 1 roll so there is a 1 in 5 chance of finding this variety right?
I have a couple of mint issue unopened rolls, not sure what to do, I like keeping them as they are but I want too look as well...

Well folks, I sure messed up on this one. I assumed coinzchange, the OP was asking about the NCLT 1 OZ fine silver H.M.S. Shannon coin, since he made his first post on the NCLT forum and invited folks to check out his post on this one. I only realized that it's the toonie which is the subject under discussion when I saw the photos posted by fed_ink85.  I don't even have a Shannon toonie to check.  So please ignore my comment, except the past about it being an impressive coin. |

No problem NuMoosematist!I'm also glad to see some others have found something in rolls. The ones I found were in the 5 packs of toonies. Nice find btw fed_ink85. Thanks for posting your pics as well.
So now my curiosity got the best of me. Is there a variety in the Fine Silver Shannons as well?

Ok, back to the searching, I don't think these varities will ever demand a high premium so I'll dig out a few for my own reference and probably stop there. I'll post my finds,
