Whiz--

Sounds like a coin I'd want but off hand, I don't remember it.

I logged in to my Triskeles account to see if it was on my previous watch list but apparently they don't save those lists after the auction. I look forward to seeing your coin-- have you posted it yet?

Haven't tried it but it did put an idea in my head, Pish...

I know there are at least two wines which feature an ancient coin on the label. Bet there are more.

I have a friend in the wine and liquor business and I've asked him to help me find any and all such wines.

Then I'll buy the coins to match. A new themed collection! Wine pairings

(but I'm serious about the idea)

Here's one for you TIF, the story go's like this, I worked in a grocery store and the wine steward showed me this bottle, which is produced here in Eastern Washington, near where Ski lives.
He told the wine steward that the he found this coin under a bridge. I contacted him about the label coin story, no reply..

Fantastic! Thanks, Eng!

I'm going to search for all wines with ancient coins on the label and put together a collection of Ancient Coins and Their Wines.

Last night I emailed a friend in the wine and liquor business and asked him for help in tracking down such wines.

I hope the matching coins aren't too expensive...

Is that Constantius? I think it's an aureus, ouch... that's going to be a pricey. Might have to find it in bronze.

Went to the Treveri Cellars website. A Washington state company. Based on their site and company info, that's likely a coin from Trier.

I don't know much about later Roman coins so I'm looking at wildwinds and ERIC to see which coin this might be.

(help is welcome)

edited: looks like the legend reads

FL VAL CONSTANTIVS NOBIL CAES

Haven't yet found a real-life example with laureate draped & cuirassed bust right.

Definitely better stick to only ancient coins on wines... just found a vineyard called Three Coins and their label has three very expensive modern coins

Hey, isn't one of those Sel's avatar?

The Constantius Chlorus of the wine label copies a very famous 10-aurei gold medallion from the Arras hoard (discovered in 1922 in northern France). In is perhaps his most famous gold medallion, and was struck at the mint of Trier (Treveri).

By the way, thanks for the plugs for our auctions. I am glad to find that folks here are enjoying our sales. We'll have another one up soon.

Best,
John

TIF would you need to find 10 coins or 1 coin and buy 10 bottles?
