Nice WE-4A2 @daltonista. Here's my PCGS AU53 WE-4A1, engrailed edge and struck over a Bristol penny. Yours is a higher grade for sure.

Looking good, Gene...here's my WE-4A1 for comparison. Since both Withers and Charlton point out this distinction, I'll note here that the edge engrailment on this one runs NW to SE; is that true for yours as well?
The PCGS grading on yours -- Top Pop! -- tells me that both of my WE-4A's should land well past MS-60 if I ever get around to having them slabbed.
Checking my database, I see that I've got five different examples of the 14 halfpenny varieties in this "Field Marshal" series (WE-1 and WE-2) identified by Charlton, but only three of them reach or exceed EF to my eyes. Will post some here soon for other opinions, as long as I have them out for auction prep anyway...
Meanwhile, I've never seen the wreathless penny variety, WE-4B -- have you? Anyone?Charlton WE-4A1, Breton 970, Withers 1490a, Scarce.

Anyone? @daltonista: To date, I've catalogued 15 of them, but there are many more in the wild (In fact, at least three examples were in Branko Marelic's collection via TCNC Auction few months ago). Here's one from the Douglas Robins collection:

Quote: 1960NYGiants: Condition wise, this is the highest grade piece from the lot. Province of Canada 1857 one penny, Ch PC-6D. I think it is Courteau #292 (R8) except it does not have the dot above the horse's left knee. Maybe Franck aka: ainsivalavie can confirm. @1960NYGiants:After analyzing the photos you sent me, I can confirm that your token is indeed the variety Courteau #292, but without its characteristic defect (The large dot in the field above the horse's left knee). To my knowledge, this is the first time I've seen this variation. But it's an uncommon variety. Eugène G. Courteau assigns it a rarity index of R.8, and thanks to the statistics I've compiled to date, and based on its scale, I would have given it a rarity index between R.8 and R.9 (A frequency of around 0.45% for the 1 Penny 1857 issue). As a result, the number of specimens that Dr. Courteau and I were able to examine is quite small, since in my case it's only the 7th example I've listed, and it's likely that the quantity of pieces of this variety examined by Dr. Courteau was at most equal to this number, if not slightly less. In any case, I will make the necessary changes in the next edition of my book on the subject. Many thanks for your contribution in providing the photos In closing, I noticed that the striking is particularly detailed on your token. But I'll refrain from being categorical about this hypothesis, as without the token in hand I can't form a truly reliable opinion about this.

Thanks for confirming the Co292 @ainsivalavie. This addition brings my total to 211 of 319. There are about 150 St. Georges in that large lot I'm going thru. Woohoo!
