I will pick up anything that is money and I'm over 60 years old. I picked up a casino chip one time that was black, worth a smooth "C" note and promptly drove over to the issuing casino and cashed it in.

When I was a little boy I had no money and finding a cent or nickel was exciting and bought me a piece of candy or a soda pop. I still get that "look what I found" RUSH today, too.

My late Father use to tell me he could gauge the economy by how much change he found in the parking lot of the local 7-11. The more change he found the better the economy was.... the less change he found the worse the economy was. Those findings went hand in hand with the rate of unemployment, too. My Dad was no economist, but he was pretty darn smart about some things.

I usually pick up anything unless it's so corroded or damaged it would probably be rejected by a coin counter. When I was a little kid, I used to always go around searching for dropped change whenever my parents took me out shopping. I found about $20 worth of cents and nickels over the course of a few years, and they took me to a toy store so I could buy something for myself. Thinking back on it, I do not envy the cashier I dumped my piggy bank at!

It really made me realize the importance of saving the money I come across.

If the coin is dirty (and believe me, 8 months of the year is slush puddle season) I will pass on it, unless it's a quarter or more. Meanwhile, a toonie is worth dangling a magnet down a drain cover, or running into traffic.

I have had some occasions where my total ended in "1" or "6", and the Cent I needed to spend was found on the ground a few minutes earlier.

About a year ago I came upon a dozen cents or so in a pool of dirty, oily water in a gutter and I was thrilled to pick them up. So I guess there's no coin I wouldn't pick up.

Depends on my mood...if I am in that "Jack Benny" mood I'll pick up a cent. Most often not.

It takes around 350 of them just to buy a gallon of gas. Truly a waste of money to make them now. There shouldn't even be cents to pick up.

@DaytR:

That was back in the early 90s. I never passed up the chance to look for stray change, and even got down on my hands and knees to look under magazine racks. I think I usually found 2-5 cents per outing at the local Kroger, and an occasional nickel or dime. Quarters were quite a find, but my prize possession was a foreign coin (I think a 10 cent from the Netherlands, 1970s) that I found near a cash register. I still have that in my collection somewhere.

I will pick up ANY money!!

I started keeping track this year and I'm sitting today at $6.42! I'm trending to about $130 for the year. I should mention that one of the items found was a $5 bill, so actually I've found $1.42 in change.

I found 79-cents last night between Coinstar and looking on the floor. Working in a market does have a few perks.
