As some of you may know I recently bought what I thought to be an Alexander Severus Denarius, but while browsing Vcoins ( the place where I purchased my " Alexander Denarius) I stumbled across a dealer who is selling what looks like to me the exact same coin but he has listed it as a Elagabalus Denarius. '')
So could someone please finally put my fears to rest and clarify who is the ruler on my coin , and what year was it issued .
Thank you .

The vcoins dealer is incorrect. Both are Severus Alexander. RIC 156 I believe

I could be wrong (often am) But aren't these two coins an exact die match both obverse and reverse ?
Very unusual to say the least

The 2 coins look very similar could they be cast copies?

Almost certainly struck. The flans do not match which would be impossible. But the dies appear identical. The difference in scale makes the determination more difficult but I am seeing quite a few points of similarity and no real differences anywhere. This is of course possible. They may have even come from the same 'hoard'. But the mints at this time were starting to gear up for the 24/7 needs to pay the troops. Finding such a match is a rare opportunity for a collector.

FYI

Sear lists this coin (Sear 7881 RIC 156) as dating AD 222 and mentions that it was also minted in Antioch.

Nope . But I am surprised no one has snagged it up yet at the price the dealer is offering.

These types are usually very affordable for collectors. The chance to have a pair would be silly to pass up.
It may be your only chance !
