Metal detecting?! Wow! I just hope to dig up something other than a pull tab! (Dug down about a foot once to find... a shovel)

I don't have much interest in gold coins because I just can't afford them. Having a look around, the prices seem to vary wildly, one going for $45,000 and another with your mint going for $9,888. I don't know whether the mints are relevant.

If I were you, I would approach someone like Bonhams, you will need to have registered it on PAS first, they will be able to advise you as to price reserve etc.

Sorry, can't gush over this coin, too bloody envious :)

You should report it to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Don't worry, you will get the value for it, or the coin back if the museums don't want it. It will be more valuable for being recorded--collectors like that.

It looks quite authentic to me!
My opinion would count for nothing, because I am not a recognized authority.
I would agree that this coin should be authenticated by David Sear. Although I believe the circumstances in which it was found, any intending buyer should do due diligence before purchase.

Normally provenance needs to be proven independently, which may be impossible to verify, or a qualified third party opinion is required, such as Sear.

Good. I would recommend either Spink & Son or Roma Numismatics since they actually specialise in selling ancient coins.

The pleasures of the English country side and here is me living within 400m of a Roman fort and only grots found to date.
The local river/stream runs within 200yds of the fort site and I have been working on bathing places to detect.
