We've gathered the start of a list of free numismatic reference material in e-book format from the across the web, and you can access it from the link at the top of this forum (or click here).

Well, ok.. by "from across the web" we mostly mean "Google books and archive.org books" but we did find a few hidden in other obscure corners. We will keep adding to it as we find new ones, and if anyone has any to suggest, please do so - as long as it's a downloadable e-book, it is free, and the site is non-commercial. Informational sites without a downloadable e-book do not qualify. It also can't violate any copyright - it's not a problem with Google e-books or archive.org, as they only have books available that are free from copyright, but please double-check any from other sources that you may suggest here.

And please let us know if any of the links in the list are dead. The internet is an ever-changing animal and there is no guarantee from one day to the next that something will be available, so do let us know if you click one and it no longer is.

Thanks, and happy reading & researching!

You might consider adding the following: http://www.coinscan.com/silverd/dollarindex.html

It's not a current catalog - the print book was published in 1961 - but it has some good info on Canada's circulating silver dollars.

Press Release from the American Numismatic Society:

In a sweeping effort to make its older and out-of-print publications available to the public as Open Access, the ANS has partnered with HathiTrust, a large, collaborative repository of digital content from research libraries and publishers that includes content digitized by Google Books and Internet Archive. Over 10 million volumes are available to research and read.

Scans of nearly 550 ANS titles - including the American Journal of Numismatics, Numismatic Literature, Numismatic Notes and Monographs - already have a home on HathiTrust, OCR-scanned earlier by the Google Books project. By granting permission, all of these scans will become fully readable and downloadable to anyone who wants them under a Creative Commons license. This means that these ANS publications can be used for personal reading, research, and academic publication just so long as the ANS is cited as the source.

The ANS's full texts will be available for use over the next few weeks as those titles are activated on HathiTrust's website. For more information contact Andrew Reinhard, Director of Publications, at areinhard@numismatics.org.

For more information about Hathi Trust, see:
www.hathitrust.org

I've just done a search on American Numismatic Society on HathiTrust's website, they already have a lot of useful titles listed with many, many more due in the near future. Great for research work. Most of the US titles I looked at are available for download in PDF to the public.

David Lawrence Rare Coins has made its entire book catalog available for online viewing and download. The prices in the various volumes are, of course, out of date but much of the information about each series in the books is still very useful.

You can access the various titles here:

Commems, Thanks for that update, I know DLRC had offered most all of these in the past, but they went away with the site upgrade they did. I emailed John Feigenbaum on this a couple of years ago, and he said he would try to get them back up when he could. So happy they are back for all to use. John is pretty busy running the CDN (greysheet, etc.) now days, so it was pretty unexpected to see this news pop up.

Michael Bourne, (the son of noted numismatic book dealer Remy Bourne),
has just released a comprehensive book on all US 3 cent patterns it is free in a downloadable PDF format from the NNP.

A wonderful work and was sorely needed to fill a hole in this research area.
