I think it was in the EAC copper grading book where I read that the 1799 cent had striking issues. Usually Liberty is strong but the date is weak or the date is strong but Liberty is weak. I've looked at 1799 cents man those are expensive. Good luck with the TPG. -MV

The date spacing and placement is wrong for a 1799

IMO, the date looks completely wrong for S-189.

Don't have my reference books in front of me, but at second glance I'm afraid it looks like a 1798.

Thanks, I realize there are a lot of fakes. I can't imaging people doing it and then making a coin look this bad, or doing it so long ago that it would corrode and erode this badly but I guess this has been rare for a long time and it might have been worthwhile to do decades ago. I can't wait to see how it comes out. I have almost nothing in it and can't be too upset either way but it would be great if indeed it is a 99

I have a 1799/8 that I purchased raw. Only reason I purchased it raw was because it had a Grellman card :-)
That does look like a 9. Best of luck to you!

How about posting your 99/8. I'm curious since a lot of people here thinks this looks like an 8 if perhaps it is a 99/8

Will do. It's pretty beat up (corroded) but it was in my realm of affordability. You can see the last nine.

Thanks, no matter how it turns out I can't complain. I got 7 coins and have a very small amount in them. I was buying silver and a woman wanted to dump these and a handful of Indians. I don't collect copper but bought them. I got a decent 1870 Indian and a corroded 1869 Indian. A couple of the large cents look to be in really good shape (EF? don't know the grade well). One I still have to put under the macro lense to see if it has a date and a couple are just OK with readable dates. If his is a 99 though it would be a great piece. I didn't plan to become a collector but this is getting me interested. I have XXX, a lot, XXX silver coins and in the process I have obtained a large % of them in unc and proof states. Maybe it's time to go and look closer at the dates :o) I know some are fairly rare, but mostly I like to stack nice silver
