DEVLEC Pillar of the Community Canada 3234 Posts	Posted 09/21/2014 10:44 am Here are the 1874's Plain 4 Crosslet 4 When you look at the plain 4 obverse legend, you can easily see how some dies were used well past their prime. In this plain 4 there are die cracks and metal movement in the legend and many details are less distinct than if it was a "strong strike and fresh die" as seen in my 1858 SD cameo piece. It probably takes a lot of expertise to realize what is a strong strike from a weak strike... and not mistake it for slight wear on the coin. So many weak strikes or worn dies could be mistaken for wear and this is where experienced graders (like Brian Cornwell) can and often do know the difference. . . . I looked at that coin also... it must be some type of refection in the 2 sheets of clear as it was in all of the pics taken to get this one sharp good pic, ....but there is nothing actually on the surface of the coin.. This obverse legend has an interesting "G" in GRATIA ..and a triple "C" in CANADA ..and the reverse date certainly is not following any straight line. I can't imagine a gang punch being used here.. If they had punched the 5 any lower,...they would have had to place it on the right side of the leaves... Any comments appreciated.. . . . I just want to see more in here if possible.. artdio... I'm so happy to see a Large Date in here now...good job... I'm no grading expert,..but don't be fooled.. because a lot of these past early dates were often weakly struck..and with poor quality dies. We're told to grade at ~4x and right now we're looking at ~100X at least,.. so every slight blemish is magnified way out of proportion.. The true grade might be a touch higher than your first guess..
