In answer to questions. I do not say what to send - your gift should have a purchase value of $5.00 or more US We do not want someone receiving a $25.00 gift and they only sent a circulating one cent coin. Choose your presents in the spirit of Giving not receiving. enjoy Santa

Chances are, if a member collects, say, wheat cents, they probably have enough that they wouldn't really want another common one; and if they collect something uncommon then both you'd have a problem getting it and they would likely have an example anyway. On the other hand, if you send something interesting and unusual, they would probably like it, and might even branch their own interests into that category. (There's a major member out there who mainly collects old shillings [of some specific time period I don't remember]; if - assuming they signed up - you got them as the recipient, would you send them an old shilling knowing that there's a 99% chance they already have a better example of the same type?)
Last two times, I basically ended up sending a set of 1-2 coins from every former Soviet republic (well, minus Belarus, their coins are NCLT and not particularly cheap), plus a bunch of other various stuff that mainly wasn't coins. Unless I see a specific better choice somewhere, I suspect I'd end up doing the same (if I participate) this time - as it's a relatively easy gift to assemble for me, and most of the possible recipients would like the variety.
TL/DR: you can use the list as a guide if you really have no ideas, but most of the time, you might as well choose the gift you want to send - at least as long as it's not something the general audience considers very unpopular.

Quote: january1may, What would you consider unpopular ? Ugly NCLT. Generic rounds too, but at least most of the time they're silver. A coin being FAO is a plus for some, but some others dislike these for not being "real" (I sadly have to say that until very recently I've been agreeing with the latter). Any Arabic/Indian coins that you basically can't identify unless you can read Arabic and/or have a very good catalogue. Which is pretty all of them from that time and place, unfortunately. Any supposedly rare (or uncommon) variety which is only (or mainly) of interest to collectors of the specific series, and won't be worth much if it wasn't this variety. Probably a few other examples too, but at the moment I can't think of any.
