D.L.Vagi's "Coinage and History of the Roman Empire" set of two books is not great on the actual coins (really just an overview) but is very good at giving you a potted history of the Empire(s). What's interesting is that they are so heavy (?) They must be printed on the most dense paper available.
Really the Wikipedia pages are pretty good for Roman history, and if you're looking for an overview you can just sit there all day and read about different wars, emperors, territories, etc.
Look at the coins on TIFs site, some of the coins have stories, and there are stories on the http://www.colosseocollection.com/p...1DE#hf2181de site also. If I win the lottery I am going to get one of those coins found buried at Pompeii.
A set I was going to go after was the Five Good Emperors (hopefully in Silver) because of the period they represent but the price got me. I have got a copy of Marcus Aurelius' texts somewhere.
