Most of the gold coins posted so far are just bullion coins, obtained at a small percentage over melt value. They're quite common, and anybody with a few hundred dollars in their budget can get most of the smaller ones.

As we go back through the 1860s and 1850s, the foreign bullion coins will run out (the US bullion coins have already ended at 1874). After that, there are some US numismatic gold coins back to 1835, and a handful of foreign ones.

Fortunately, there are silver and copper coins to fill in the gaps and eventually take over, back into the 1700s. Some of these have already appeared in other threads.

Meiji Year 3 (1870) Yen. At 38.5mm and 26.96g, this 0.900 silver coin conformed to Western bullion standards of the time. 1870 marks the first year of yen coinage -- the yen was officially adopted as the official currency in 1871 -- and is noted as the beginning of the Japanese industrial revolution.
