1772 8 reales, Viceroyalty of New Spain, Mexico City mint. First year of the Charles III portrait design. All issues from Mexico City for this year have the inverted mintmark and assayers initials but this rare variety has the transposed initials, MF instead of FM.  |

1771 8 reales, Viceroyalty of Peru, Lima mint. The early milled 8 reales of the Spanish American colonies are often called 'Columnarios', 'Dos Mundos' or 'Pillar Dollars' from the reverse design depicting the Pillars of Hercules, wrapped with the national motto of Spain 'PLUS ULTRA' (further beyond), framing two globes, representing Spain's dominion over the old and new worlds.  |

I definitely prefer the design of the pillar type 8R over bust type. They're great looking coins.
