On 29 July 1981, Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in St Paul's Cathedral. At that time we didn't know that the marriage would end in sadness and tragedy - or, for that matter, give us Princes William and Harry.

Most British territories and many other Commonwealth countries issued coins to commemorate the wedding - this is a 38mm crown-size cupro-nickel 50p from the Falkland Islands:

Falkland Islands 10 pence coin from 1980. The Falkland Islands currency is pegged to the British pound, and they first issued their own coins in 1974.

UK 1979 decimal half penny:

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Third-Edition!-Ended-At-1487-Waiting-On-1486

1979 was the year Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first (and so far only) female Prime Minister. High inflation during the 1970s had greatly reduced the purchasing power of the half penny coin, and it was eventually demonetised on December 31, 1984. The coin had never been popular; banks disliked it, and you could not put a halfpenny on a cheque. Probably what really caused the coin's demise was the widespread introduction of electronic tills and accounting machines that replaced the old mechanical cash registers in the 1980s.

Wow SPP - that's a spectacular error cent!

I'm starting off 1978 with a French 1 Franc:

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Third-Edition!-Ended-At-1487-Waiting-On-1486

The very famous obverse design, "La Semeuse" (The Sower) was the work of Oscar Roty and was first used on the half, one and two-franc coins issued from 1898 to 1920. Was Weinman inspired by this coin when he designed the Walking Liberty half dollar?

After a gap of 40 years, The Sower returned to French coins in 1960 when the currency was revalued. The new nickel one-franc coin was about the size of a quarter and was worth 100 old francs.

The 1978 franc was significant as it was the last date issued for circulation in large numbers until 1991. Most one-franc coins of the 1980s were NIFC issues. The release of the new 2-franc coin lessened the need for the denomination, in the same way that the 20p coin reduced the need for 10p coins in the UK after 1982.
