TOS is irrelevant when your business model breaks the law, and they've got a lot more than coins to worry about.

Quote:If ebay got their feathers ruffled enough, is there a chance they would/could prohibit the sale of coins altogether? Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? Maybe a good poll question. I know some auction sites don't allow coin sales. I can't see them doing that as the number of coin sales through ebay are extremely high in both numbers and dollar amounts, what I could see as a remote possibility would be a restriction in the number or value that new-ish sellers would be allowed to list in that (along with certain other) catagories

ebay essentially surrendered to the scammers + counterfeiters back in April when they disbanded the Trust and Safety board, removed the ccw and let go of Judith Stair. Until there is a change in management, I would not hold my breath waiting for ebay to stop these people. At this point, only advanced collectors/dealers should be buying on ebay......it is no longer safe for the novice.

Interesting thread on ebay purchases, all that glitters is not gold I guess. Ive backed off from making purchases of raw coins because I am deeply concerned about the vast amount of fakes in the market and don't have any experience in knowing what a fake coin looks. I certainly would not buy anything from China and have lost a lot of money in the education of collecting especially in these times of cloak and dagger with counterfeiters becoming experts at fooling the so called TPG experts. I don't know about others but I cant afford too many more costly "lessons" it is expensive enough to maintain a decent collection and nowadays we have to second guess that.

IMHO, ebay didn't surrender, they've literally joined forces by turning a blind eye. ebay is complicit, making money on the fakes. As much as I disdain the thought of Big Brother, the FTC, Federal Trade Commission, or some other government entity needs to set guidelines for ebay and levy fines for non-compliance.

Honestly this is why I don't buy online. I just stick to coin shows in the county. Nothing more than that

Understand I'm not going to bat for ebay here, but simply relaying information that is readily available when you look for it. This is an excerpt from: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies...arantee.html"Counterfeit items If a buyer suspects that an item is counterfeit, and there are strong indicators that the item is counterfeit, we don't require the buyer to return the item to the seller. The buyer agrees to cooperate with us to ensure the proper disposal of the item. In such instances, we refund the buyer for the full cost of the item and original shipping, and the seller reimburses us for the refund. The buyer may not sell the item on ebay or elsewhere." I don't know what "strong indicators" entail, or if submitting your counterfeit to the Black Cabinet qualifies as "ensure the proper disposal of the item" (although I don't see why it wouldn't be...an affidavit under penalty of purgery sounds like a "strong indicator" and quid pro quo "stamp of justice" disposal to me) but I do know that "Education is the Key to Collector Success!".

I did forget to give an update. ebay accepted the letter, and the fake Trade dollar -- just a few nights ago -- met Justice (I could say "we heard Justice ring" :-) ) so it's jake with ebay. So now I'm contemplating something like this... Quote:Bounties What are Bounties on The Black Cabinet? The word “bounty” generally refers to some sort of gift or reward; however, it can also mean “generosity.” This page lists examples of counterfeits presently for sale on ebay by sellers who seem intent upon offering them. Where we here cannot act upon these directly (outside of reporting them with mixed results) if you, gracious reader, feel bountiful enough to help remove them from circulation by means of purchase, The Black Cabinet will provide you with the appropriate certified letter to get your money back via ebay's Customer Protection Policy.[link] Edit: I would also have to add in a disclaimer that the letter offer is void in Canada, as to purchase or try to purchase counterfeits is against the Canadian Criminal Code. It's fine to do so in the US, UK, and EU, though (our and their laws focus on sellers; Canada's code focuses on buyers and exporters). If someone were to *find* one of their items is counterfeit and I could confirm it, I would issue a letter, regardless.
