quote: t360... another What do these sell for? They are absolutely drop dead gorgeous!
Woo-boy, medieval gold coins are not cheap, and our dollar is not worth much: 1) France, Charles VI (1417) 1300 euros = US $1,904.32 2) France, Jean le Bon (1355) 2000 euros = US $2,929.72 Still, a beautiful gold coin, six centuries old, is a joy forever and they are worth it. People spend that much on their plasma TVs nowadays, which might last 10 years before they are thrown away.

t360 ~ You are a good salesman! I would buy it in a heartbeat... if I had 2929.72 available... (I don't think the hubby would smile at me... you know a nickle is a nickle!) Actually... I kind of would have it thought more... I mean a 652 years old and so perfect!!... and a sheep to boot... that has to add to the value right? Nancy! Thanks... that's so awesome! I've been watching ebay for aussie sheep coins since posting this and there haven't been any! I did see a Falkland Island lot of 7 coins with 2 sheep... but was unsure of the seller... so I let them pass.

Sakura ~ I just checked out the wikipedia link... The sheep depicted on the new coins is the Mouflon. Interestingly I just did research on sheep breeds for a 4-H youth sheep program I have started... Mouflon is the oldest recorded breed of sheep in the world... researchers believe that they are the actual acestor breed that all domestic sheep have been derived from! There are 2 different Mouflon, the Asiatic Mouflon which would include the ones in Cyprus and the European Mouflon. They have found evidence of these sheep being used domestically over 6000 years ago! A little sheep history...

Monarchy Auctions just listed this 1700 Gold Klippe Half Ducat from the free city of Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Germany. It is only 15mm square, but still a nice artistic gold piece (for not too much money).

Wow, thanks for the historical info Sheepy. I didn't know that those Mouflons have a history 6000 years old. :) And as a token of appreciation, here's another image of a sheep coin. An ancient electrum hecte from Aeolis circa 480-440 BC, depicting a ram's head.

Sakura ~ that is fabulous!! Looking at all these ancient coins just shows how valuable sheep were to those societies! They literally fed and clothed people...
t360... I think my dream would be to have one of those gold coins... they are all quite beautiful! Interestingly those that you showed would represent the Lamb of God... not just a run of the mill sheep...
NancyC... ooooo boy... I will be watching my mail box anxiously!! will let you know when they come!
