I have an old school Tesoro Lobo. I only usually detect in the rainy months of the Pacific NW. My detector finds deeper items in moist ground, plus its easier to dig.

I'll sometimes go out several times in a week and then not for months. I like trying the local beaches after a storm, when the surface sand gets swept away and interesting things can get thrown up by the sea. Unfortunately in summer the beaches aren't as good as they used to be as fewer people bring money down with them, and the newer clad steel UK low value coins give a junk type signal on my detector. For places like farmland, parks, public footpaths etc., the last few summers have ben so hot that the earth is rock hard, even if you can get permission to hunt. I went all around the large garden of a derelict 1840s house recently and found absolutely nothing - either the past owners were very careful with their loose change, or another detectorist got there first!

So true.
To know your machine and how it really works there is only one answer: time swinging the coil (while it's on of course ).

For newer hobbyists, instructional videos on operation are a big help in getting to know how to tweak the settings.

We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
