This seems unusual because of the very even, straight lines and there being slightly different directions on the obverse compared to the reverse. I am not certain that it is an improper alloy mix. Any thoughts?

My theory on these is that impurities were pressed into the planchet sheets when they were rolled. While you can't see the lines until the coin tones, they are there. Seems to have happened more in the early 80's, i.e. 1980 & 1981.

Quote: My theory on these is that impurities were pressed into the planchet sheets when they were rolled Thank you. I wonder if anything in detail is known about rollers. The lines on the coin make it appear that there was a long line of rollers spaced rather closely together. Do we know if that, in fact, is the case?
