I just searched through most of my wheats and pulled out 17 woodies, of which the top 8 are pictured. I'm not sure that the 1925 really counts as a woody, but it does have a nice big band of lighter metal. For the best coins, I added a close up to show the texture.

Thanks. To find just 17 woodies, I had to go through enough wheats to fill a $25 canvas quarter bag about 3/5 of the way.

Every time I see those nice grains I think of gun stocks and knife handles.

UK Half Penny 1921
The pattern seems to be caused by differences in the metal. My guess is there was some brass or bronze alloy problems. And it caused lamination issues as well.

Yes, the 'wood grain' pattern is caused when copper and other metals don't fully mix. Then when the metal is rolled into sheets, the areas of more brassy metal get stretched long and thin, causing the striations.
That's an amazing half penny!

Do both sides have to have the design to be considered woody or is one side is enough?

I think it can be on just one, but correct if I'm wrong. Either way, Chute's coin is very impressive. It does have a bit at around 5 o'clock on the obverse, though.
