That's 100% ridiculously artificially toned. Ouch. The chemicals they use for AT are VERY harsh.

They make nice jewelry pieces, though, especially in pendants.

Just kidding here so don't take any of this as serious, but all true.

We had a member here in the past year post a toned coin. Not quite as toned as the artificially toned one posted above, but it was toned and then some. Sure looked artificial.

It was natural toning though.

His infant daughter ate the coin and when it came out the other end, a great toner.

While not typical toning, you can't call that anything but natural toning.

One of my best laughs on this site, along with the hand drawn sketch of a Wheat cent or was it a Franklin half. Either way they were great threads and got me to sign up.

Thanks for finding the thread Don.

That thread had me rolling.

I know bumping very old threads is frowned upon, but I am bumping that back to the top for any new members.

Classic thread.

Edit: Here is some click bait for those on the fence about following Don's link. Yes this is the rare Donald Trump variety of the Franklin half with full comb over.

SGS MS70 and one half.

Not my coin, all credit to Wheatchaser.

I think rainbow/target toned coins are fantastic, and Quarters can be done. Sounds like a fun set to me!

I am also collecting unc. Washington quarters and I have a few toners. They are very fun to put together. Try to avoid ebay as much as you can because most toners there are artificially toned with chemicals. Try to find them yourself at a coin shop or a show, so you can inspect the coin before you buy it. Washington quarters are very common so I am sure that most dealers in your area should have some in stock.

Good Luck!

It is okay if there is a solid reason. Bumping just to just say "nice" is not a good reason, but what you did is probably okay.

Run away from AT coins, unless you really like them. You will only get melt for them when trying to sell.
I like toners and also Blast white. Prefer the cool toners though.

That 1958 is a perfect example of what artificial tone looks like. The color of this one being a dead giveaway, others can be quite deceiving. The easiest way to tell is by the grade, meaning 99.9% of toned coins are in the MS range with 1% in high AU. In my opinion, coins such as this fall under the same definition as counterfeit since they are created to deceive for profit.
