After further thought I realized I made a mistake.

Can I edit my guess?

Sure you could, no question, but I knew you meant 1856 anyway. But once again I have made it too easy and Seatednut has guessed correctly.

The boy told us how he was living with his grandma because his mother passed away. He said he still sees his father sometimes and he apparently is a real JERK! This kid had been saving his allowance from his grandma for months because his dad told him that the only way he could come live with him is if he brought a 1913 V nickel to pay the rent with. A darn sad sight to say the least.
Congratulations to Seatednut!

Poor kid. That's a very sad story. Makes me want to go home and hug my kids. Well, hug them one more time than usual.

Poor kid. Pretty obvious his Dad wanted nothing much to do with him because he gave the youngster an impossible task. Fancy any Dad telling an 8 yr old he has to pay rent.

Although the boy wouldn't realise it, he's much better off with his Grandmother.

Philney,

Information sent. A truly sad story. I only get my grandson over once a week and I cherish every moment with him. I can't imagine what type of sub-human would say that to a young boy. I wish I could send the prize to him.

I hope the kid grows up to make millions and when his dad comes begging for money closes the door in his face

And the fact that he was dropped off at that age and left alone by his grandmother who 'got' him from the dad, 2 people, rather 3, mom dad and gma, arent looking out for this child!

Just blows ones mind, I tell ya!

Man that poor baby. He must miss his mom terribly. Very sad. She was probably the only adult to really show love and care for him, as a mother should. It's sad he lost her at such a young age.

His dad who doesn't deserve to be called " a dad" doesn't deserve him.
I hope and pray he grows up to be strong and stays out of trouble.
The kid is searching for someone to love and accept him and it doesn't seem grandma fits the bill much less "dad".

Congrats SeatedNut!

I was gonna change my answer to a Presidential $ error. Wasn't even close.

When I first read this I couldn't get over the fact that an 8 or 9 year old was dropped off at a coin auction by himself. I guess that is only one of his problems.

You know, I never really thought how bad it sounds that he was dropped off by himself, but I do want to add that it is a club meeting (still open to the public) at a church with the pastor and his wife in attendance. Still, I wouldn't drop my kid off there.
