If you have quite a few, for $15-$20 you can get a flat stapler. For the time saving alone it might be worth it.

The common slip joint pliars are really cheap and readily available - especially at garage sales and 2d hand shops. I too, was leery of the kind that have tiny grooves for gripping, but discovered that mine work well. The biggest problem is the marks are more often grease from the last auto repair, so give them a cleaning first. The advantage is that the staple is gripped and won't twist when pressure is applied by the pliers. My observations are quite small in the over all scheme of things, and tape over the jaws would smooth them. In truth, the hammer is probablty the best. I have used watchmaker's tools, and a polished face hammer and a tiny anvil work very well. The impact can compress the staple below the surface of the cardboard even with springback.
Probably more than you wanted to know.
Rest in Peace

Chute72 , Why go through all that trouble ? If you take pride in your collection . then go buy the flat clinch stable gun and staples.

you'll save a lot of time and won't have to worry about damage to 2x2 or coin.

Thanks to those who clued me in to flattening the staples. I noticed one of my Morgans has a new scratch on the obverse due to the curved staples on the backside of the adjacent flip. On the bright side, the coin with the new scratch is a circulated Morgan (phew) :)

I started the long project of flattening all the staples on my 2x2s. Can someone post a picture of the staples they flattened, I know, it sounds weird.

Use 2X2's without staples. Problem solved. I've been using them for over 20 years and you also have no toning or spotting or any other surface damage.

It is okay if you have a good pocket page to hold it closed tight. I have done this a few times, but eventually went back and stapled it.

I'm talking about 2X2's (and 2.5X2.5's) that are made to self seal without staples.

The best on the planet are Day Mount brand, but good luck finding them. I've been using them for 22 years now (checked my first order) and not a single coin has ever had a bit of toning or surface change in that time.

If you can't find Day Mount, then you have to go with the SAFE brand made in Germany. They aren't cheap, many times what a normal 2X2 costs, but you essentially have an air tight holder without staples for your best yummies.

It's also cool that they make sizes that fit Capped Bust Halves, 3 Cent Silvers, Gold Dollars, and other ODD sizes.
