I would love to see someone test a few of these for specific gravity. Nothing about the shape of these would prevent a test with water submersion, right?

...Well put, colonialjohn ... I've seen other examples of various nation's silver coinage, cut in similar fashion & sharing the same (rough) % of weight reduction...

...@jgenn ... by your request a specific gravity test, are you wondering if the coins are genuine or fake? ...Good point, & a good question,...

... damaging genuine coins for any other purpose would seem foolish, & producing fakes to promote a false narrative, also, seems foolish, as the cost would outweigh the effort ...

...Several knowledgeable cob dealers, including Sedwick (Dan), have noted & discussed the aforementioned possibility, using genuine cobs as examples...

...counterfeit cobs have been around since the 1st ones were struck...Anyone not familiar with these coins, not being to tell the difference, would share the same concerns as you ...

...also, the final determination of the validity of any coin should be done with the coin in hand, not by pictures ...

... in conclusion, (1.)I agree that anything of this type should be verified as genuine ... (2.) the hypothesis that these examples were an ad hoc adaptation is still just that: a theory ...

...a dang good theory with some intriguing evidence, that needs further investigation...

...anyone with similar examples, please post them here ...
