Gresham's Law

I have never known what this was until I looked into it a little bit. I think this law ,which by the way was thought of before Gresham just happened to get named after him, applies to a lot more than just currency. So the bad drives out the good or the cheaper drives out the more expensive is a very broad way of putting it. But look at it like that. The difference would be the hoarding in some cases because you cant hoard people and you can't hoard a trade. But if you look at it like that it applies in a lot of areas. I was a roofer for 7 years and they used to pay really well her and pay by the job. Then out of country labor started to filter in and the price they paid went way down to an hourly rate now for most. also they use other countries for call centers because labor and building is cheaper there. So looking at that the cheaper takes over and we are left with the good stuff just sitting there. In this case we are our own good quality money/people/labor. lets say you have a garage sale and you sell your stuff. What you are doing is essentially circulating garbage and hoarding your good stuff. In most cases of course there are exception to everything . Scotch, cheap scotch is drank while good scotch is aged and hoarded same with wine. Essentially Gresham and others where onto something bigger than they knew. In the evaluation of money/economics they stumbled onto something bigger and more disturbing. As we can see money drives how everything is looked at and how everything is used.

Now this is where it becomes all opinion because I feel that value should be placed on quality . If you where a native American and you had a nice buffalo hide to trade for some corn . You won't trade your nice hide for rotten corn and or you wouldn't trade your nice perfect corn for some beaten up badly skinned wreck of a hide. like I said always dire straits and exceptions to rules but in the mean this wouldn't be going on.

Again this was a quick look into Gresham's law for me and my thoughts may evolve as time goes on. anyway I had 10 min to learn Gresham's law think and type this before work have a good weekend.:)

Thanks tweak.

Yep, good money will be hoarded and bad money will circulate.

If you love your country you should also learn to love paying taxes. That said I'm fully aware of the corruption thats bred from excess and greed. These things that plague our system may never be fully avoided but hopefully we can learn to control it better and punish the guilty. I'm also in favor of a flat tax and not progressive as we should all be treated equally and nobody should ever be penalized for having more money than another thats what the american dream is built on and why should we discourage when we should only be encouraging people wanting to work harder, continue their education, get better jobs and save money. But if you dont like to save thats fine by me too because it keeps the economy chugging along and also keeps my stocks growing. Another quick point while I'm on it is can we please make finance 101 mandatory in order to graduate high school like asap? I believe a strong military is paramount to a strong, free and secure nation like the one we enjoy everyday thank you taxes. The infrastructure we travel on everyday the great public schools we send our children to the wholesome and safe society we live in thanks to police forces are all thanks to the taxes we pay. Oops I better hit send as I am starting to rant and havent been counting my words.guess I had plenty of room but ill keep it short other than adding the national parks we so love and enjoy and the firefighters that also keep us and our homes safe are just few of the many examples I can go on and on about. Oh and plus-i love free shipping on ebay and sometimes recieving my gifts the very next day, thank you USPS!

P.S. Before I get blasted I do know the post office is considered a private entity with no tax dollar funding but they do receive subsidies and the federal govt is ultimately responsible for mail service to US citizens-it's all debatable tho and I wasn't trying to get into that was actually just making light of the whole subject

We have enough entries to end this as promised on 2.19.16 as described in the first post.

Keep the entries coming and feel free to tell me who you think should be winners.

Once we have winners, I will rank them and give 1st place 1st choice and so on. I do have multiples of some of these prizes too so if everyone wanted an Ike, I can swing that no problem.

For safety reasons do not post any personal information in the thread if you are a winner.

Contest is over. I will go over the thread and pick some winners here (5 winners in fact) this weekend.

For now though I am ready to announce the grand prize winner, KenKat for his post ranking the fighting ability of all the US Presidents.

If you know what prize you want, it is your pick first KenKat. If you have any questions about the prizes, feel free to ask.

Also don't post personal info in this thread for safety. PM me your address.

Wow thank you Buckeye - good contest indeed!

I have always wanted to own an ancient and have none, so I will take one of the diobols. I would assume that the relatively higher grade one would be the better of the two, so I would be very pleased to claim prize D unless you feel C is the better choice for some reason.

PM sent and thanks again!

You are quite welcome KenKat.

Your post was funny.

Just an FYI on the diobol coin.

They are small, but interesting.

They weigh just over a gram of silver, so roughly 50 cents worth of silver value, tons more historical value. Smaller than a dime, but for a budget ancient silver, it is my go to recommendation. Hard to get an older silver coin for less money. A real sweet spot in the ancients market it seems. Nothing rare, but a nice addition to any collection.

I can pick up fairly nice coins like this for no more than $50.

I have bought several under $10 delivered from Germany.

Some websites call them a 1/12th stater instead of a diobol. Some collectors argue that they are a trihemiobol (an obol and a half instead of two obols).

I got your message and address. I will likely mail these out Monday or Tuesday here next week.

For now, here is a great link on the coin. You will be getting one with the lion head on the obverse and the incuse star / flower on the reverse.

Same website as above, but here is some history of Miletus.

http://rjohara.net/coins/history/

Quote:
THE ancient Greek city of Miletus in Asia Minor, on what is now the west coast of Turkey, was the intellectual and commercial center of the Greek world in the century before Athens rose to prominence. It has been called the birthplace of the modern world.

Quote:
According to tradition, Miletus was founded about 1400 bc as a Minoan trading colony which fell under the control of the Mycenean Greeks and then the indigenous Carians after Minoan civilization collapsed. Miletus is mentioned in the Iliad, where its Carian citizens are seen fighting with the Trojans against the Greeks. The city is said to have been refounded by mainland Greeks about 1000 bc when Neleus, son of King Kodros of Athens, murdered its Carian inhabitants. This refounding of Miletus was part of the broader Ionian Migration of mainland Greeks to the eastward, during which the celebrated "Twelve Cities of Ionia" were established on the west coast of Anatolia. From the eighth to the sixth century before Christ all these Ionian Greek cities flourished, and Miletus became a major commercial and colonizing center. Almost 100 Milesian colonies were established all around the Black Sea and as far south as Naucratis on the Nile Delta in Egypt.

The prosperity of Miletus came by virtue of its location: a port city at the mouth of a major river—the Greater Meander, or Büyük Menderes—on the eastern edge of the Greek world. Miletus established commercial ties with the non-Greek Lydians to the east, and the Lydians themselves prospered through trade with the Persians and with other cultures in Asia. But the geographical location of Miletus also made it vulnerable from both land and sea. After the Persians under Cyrus the Great conquered Lydia in 546 bc, Miletus was able to remain neutral through diplomacy and bribery for a time, but when the Ionian cities revolted against Persian overlordship beginning in 499 bc, Miletus was besieged and eventually destroyed in 494 bc, despite the provision of twenty additional ships from Athens to aid the city's inhabitants.

The destruction of Miletus in 494 bc was one of the great catastrophes of early Greek civilization. A play by Phrynichus called The Capture of Miletus, written soon after the city was destroyed, caused so much emotional turmoil in Athens that the playwright was fined and future performances were banned (Rosenbloom, 1993). And it was Athens' support of Miletus against Persia that touched off the century-long series of Persian wars that engaged the whole Hellenic world and that led to the eventual rise of Athens as the great naval power of the Mediterranean. Herodotus reports that the Persian king Darius, after he had crushed the revolt in Ionia, kept the flames of war alive in his mind by ordering a servant to whisper three times to him every day, "Master, remember the Athenians."

Darius' invasion of mainland Greece was beaten back at Marathon in 490 bc, and a second invasion led by Darius' son Xerxes was beaten back at Salamis in 480 bc. The Ionian coastline was eventually reconquered by the Greeks, but it was then ceded back to Persia, only to be conquered again by Alexander the Great in 334 bc. Miletus later came under Roman domination, and its large theater, which is still visible today, dates from that period. Though in all these later periods Miletus continued to be an important port, it never regained the greatness it had had during the seventh and sixth centuries. As the ages passed, the river Meander silted up the Milesian harbors and the site was eventually abandoned.

Trying to pick the other 4 winners here, or at least another one tonight before heading off to bed.

Have decided to distribute the remaining 4 prizes as follows.

1 prize for category #1 on taxes. Any thoughts or help there?

1 prize for category #3 the wildcard topic. I am debating between the Gresham's Law posts or the Andrew Jackson assassination post. Any feedback there?

Still 2 more prizes to distribute. Going to give at least one of them to another #2 topic on ranking the US Presidents fighting ability, perhaps 2 prizes. If I don't go with 2 prizes here for the fighting topic, I will likely award it to either one of the Gresham posts or the Jackson post.

Anyway, I will announce at least one more winner tonight at roughly midnight eastern time for those interested. I have a date with my nephew to play some Star Wars Battlefront on Xbox here tonight so I will think this contest over some while trying to restore order to the Galaxy and laying waste to the Rebel Scum.
