Quote: I keep them just because they are worth more than face. Nickels as well. They are at least 'real' money! Like silver coins in the early 1960s Funny, I feel the same way, even if it is not exactly the same as silver.

Yes, I know not the same, but who knows some day! I remember when I was very young my father not wanting to have anything to do with the 40% halves when they came out! He passed long before any real rise in silver so he never knew how much even those 40% could bring. To me any coin is worth more than the printed paper with no intrinsic value. But can't keep all the change!

hi coin lover , very good topic ! I read some time ago about the difference about coins collectors and coins hoarding ... Probably everybody knows Joshua Mcmorrow Hernandez , and what he wrote once it's exactly what all the members are talking about here ... There are collectors that they want to set albums and there are people that their target is hoarding coins for other reasons that can be because of the metal , future investiment , expectation of that someday it will be something rare for the next generations wherever ... I'm a coin collector with a specific target of coins and albums to set , I don't have any intention of accumulate coins for any other reason but respect who thinks different and don't think they are wrong , just with different targets !

All perfecly said, imo. I would just add/or say more about a caution with the theory of "hoarding" them with an 'obsession' level of unhealthy proportions. You don't want 73 fifty gallon drums for your grandchildren to have to deal with ! (Although I'm sure they'd like to turn them into the bank...lol)

Many years ago I started separating copper cents from zinc ones. It is easy when you do it as you get them. I don't roll search with any regularity so it is just fun to keep them. I have a few shoe boxes of rolled coins now. The cost is minimal so why not? If I ever decide to cash them in then I would use the money to buy more coins anyway.

Quote: There are about 300,000 cents per TON. ($3,000 and 2,000 pounds weight). That sounds about right. I've got $3098 Face, @ 2,013.7 Pounds sitting in my basement. I haven't been searching cents for a couple years now, but when I did, I saved all the coppers. I've had them on Graigslist for over a year, with only one promising prospect, and he backed off. Guess I'll start hauling them to the coin machine at my bank a hundred or two at a time. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I meant scrap dealers (or anyone) are currently not allowed to melt U.S. 1¢ and 5¢ coins. Why would a scrap dealer want to buy cents or nickels in bulk quantities, if not to melt?

Scrap dealers in Canada are buying US copper cents. They can and do melt them. I have been told that reclaiming nickel is not viable profit wise.

I see no reason why they cannot buy and hoard them, just like any of us.

There were some members on here who turned a decent and reliable profit from selling to perfectly reputable folk who did NOT smuggle the coins into Canada to be melted. I think at peak, copper was about $4/lb. That is some pretty serious money considering that I think there areally 143 cents to the pound. Alas, those days are gone with the housing boom. I myself have reached the point where I am about to haul my hoard to the nearest coinstar so my wife can buy whatever nonsense she wants on Amazon.

Too funny My wife does NOT like me spending any of "our" money on my coin hobby...certainly extra cents would go towards bills or our 11 year old.
