berto Pillar of the Community United States 840 Posts	Posted 04/01/2016 1:41 pm Rackster, the damage on your 1916-S reminds me of some halves I found when looking through a box of halves in December...About 20 halves in this box had apparently been deposited by someone AFTER they scratched the obverse similar to your 1916-S nickel. All the ~20 halves were otherwise AU, with the most remarkable a 1987-P...Why would someone deface an otherwise collectable coin? Perhaps they had stolen the coins from someone they despised, scratched the coins as a way of getting back at the person they despised, and then deposited the coins in the bank? I'll never know, and I'll never understand. Hopefully, the "scratcher" sought help so they didn't become a serial coin scratcher! Report this Post to the Staff
Rackster Pillar of the Community United States 4809 Posts	Posted 04/01/2016 9:52 pm Hi berto - it is a shame. It was a nice grade coin otherwise. Many of the Buffalo in these boxes were environmentally challenged or like this - defaced. I found a 1913 Var 2 without a date, but the reverse was VF; just the date missing and some of the obverse details. My guess was that obverse was buffed to the extent the date was lost. berto Pillar of the Community United States 840 Posts	Posted 04/02/2016 11:41 am Rackster, I admit earlier this week I broke down and bought a set of Indian head nickels off ebay for $50. The set has 11 acid dates, but is missing only 3 coins. I simply don't have time to look through nickels at this time given the age of my kids...I'm too busy. When I can make time I search half dollars. Believe me, I will eventually return to nickel searching because I enjoy it. HH :) Report this Post to the Staff

I did stick out sorting a couple of boxes since the Buffalo were plentiful. In the mix were a ton of pre-60s and rolls worth of post 60s AU/BU coins. I've been through the BU coins and now working through the AU coins. I've also a bunch of 60s nickels in a bin (600 or so) that need to be searched for varieties. That'll take a chunk of time this weekend to sort. I'll eventually get around to posting the fun finds and there are several so far. I'm tempted to search another box I've sitting by the desk...but I'll refrain from adding to the sorting pile...for now. Good problems to have! And my youngsters are 11 and 14 so the demand on my time is less than that of a few years ago. It just hasn't translated into more coining time. Report this Post to the Staff
berto Pillar of the Community United States 840 Posts	Posted 04/04/2016 12:16 pm Rackster, my kids are now 14, 16, and 18, and I swear they take as much of my time (and more mental and financial resource) now as when they were toddlers, so watch out! I think by this Fall I'll have enough time to look through nickel boxes again because my oldest will be away in college and my second oldest will be in Brazil on a student exchange for 1 year. I'm not looking forward to them being gone, but I am looking forward to having more "me" time so I can spend some of it looking through coin rolls again :) Happy Hunting! Rackster Pillar of the Community United States 4809 Posts	Posted 05/02/2016 8:09 pm I don't find many Buffalo, perhaps 1 every 2-3 boxes, but I've been assisted by 3 Buffalo dumps in the past 2 years. In total, I've found nearly 3 rolls of them with 2/3 having partial/full dates. The rest I pickle for the pickled nickel collection. That's actually been a fun activity. Report this Post to the Staff
