Hi there, I recently won a coin in an ebay auction from an ebay coin seller with nearly 1000 positive feedback 100%. I asked him before the auction if this Queen Victoria 1887 crown had been cleaned or dipped and he said no it hadn't, so I won the auction and the coin has been delivered. I'm not entirely convinced though now I have received the coin. It does seem to have almost hairline cleaning marks on each side, and although it's in wonderful condition I did pay 120 pounds for this coin so I'm looking to find out if you think it's been cleaned and what you would value it as. I'm unsure if I should ask for a refund or not so your help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Sam   |

to the Community! It does look like cleaning, but it might not be recently cleaned, hence the seller's opinion. |

Thanks for your opinions. Is something that would really decrease its value? I was thinking of sending it in to get it graded but not if its been cleaned. 120 pounds is a lot of money, would you get s refund ?

Was a good idea to put your pictures up. The coin is cleaned and you need to get your money back. You will no doubt learn a lot from the experience and having the coin in hand. ebay is ok for a more experienced collector ,but on the whole full of RANG TANG. Better to buy off dealers who are reputable and get yourself to a coin show. |

Unfortunately a coin cleaned to that degree makes the collectable value on a common coin pretty much zero. For that reason I have to agree with the above post that the value is minimal. Go on ebay and hundreds of silver cleaned coins from 1887 that are being sold for low amounts as the market is flooded with them. I agree the market will determin what its worth and in this case its not so much . |

You guys need to tell the original seller it is worth melt and have him give me a call I need one of those for my crown collection ;) Looking at sales I will have to pay up a bit over melt to get one with that nice of details though. And in response to the OP, it does appear cleaned and if he said it wasn't you really need a refund and return.

Coin is certainly cleaned, which is unfortunate because it looks like it was close to UNC... However, it is certainly worth more than melt.

I also realize that 1887 Jubilee style coins are common. But I see a very robust demand in all kinds of older crowns on the U.S. site. If this were a shilling, let's say, then much less so. |

As I said only cheap in that condition......didnt say anything to do with melt. Regardless of price its daft to buy a common coin that is not right, as the beginner learns he would then only replace it Unforunately beginners need to learn the signs before parting with there money as the original thread was started with a good question. A lot of people are being sold coins on ebay that are misdescribed with both grade and condition. |

I may get a 1873 florin, which I will post, should I win an auction for a mixed lot of world coins. I would be anxious to get opinions as to what problems the coin may have.
