Based on how worn some of the 1852-54 coins look they had to be used for a few years. A lot of them are holed, possibly from bring strung to carry. By the mid 1850's and the advent of SF mint silver they were bad money containing only about 75% of their face value in gold. They survived only as souvenir tokens.
